Veteran 182 Hillsboro, OR | Subject: Barney died this weekend This post is more a need for me to work through my grief over having to put one of our dogs to sleep yesterday than an attempt to start a discussion. Here is his story: June 2008My name is Barney and this is my story. I was born in unknown parts of the Northwest in early 2008. My mom had distemper while pregnant and since birth, I have been different from my littermates. As the runt of the litter, I drew the short straw. I didn’t grow very fast and it took me a little bit longer to figure things out. When I was a few months old, they told me I was mentally challenged and had undiagnosed health problems. That’s about all I remember from my first 6 months of life other than that all my littermates kept disappearing. People would come visit us and one by one my brothers and sisters would go home with them. Some families had little kids to play with. Some had teenage boys to go exploring with. People would pet me and cuddle me but no one would take me home. Why not me? I don’t know. All I want is a forever home and a last name. Because I have no owner, I have no forever home or a last name (Dog Code of Conduct: a dog cannot have a last name unless he has an owner. Fosters do not count). Why not me? I don’t know. Is it because I look different from my brothers and sisters? They started out about the same size as me, but they grew much faster and pretty soon they were all much bigger than me. Would someone not want me because I’m too small? I weigh only 25 pounds. Oh, did I tell you I’m a blood hound/pointer mix. I can hunt, I know I can. Nevertheless, after six months I’m the only one left without a forever home. All my littermates are gone and I have no one to play with. I spend my days looking at everyone who walks by my kennel, hoping that someone will stop and take me home. When I was 6 months old, someone took a chance on me. A couple took me in as a foster because I am a nice dog and they thought that I could be adopted! I went to their home and was socialized with both their dogs and other rescue dogs. I gained weight and became a very happy puppy. Four weeks at their house was bliss with no kennel, just a big back yard! I even got to sleep in their bed between them (they had to put plastic covers on the bed cause of my bladder problems). They took me to the vet and told him to find out what was the cause of my physical problems. That took weeks. The good news is that my foster family adopted me. I am no longer a non-wanted dog! To make it even better, my new family has a wall of fame, filled with pictures of all of the special dogs in their life. My picture is right there among the greatest dogs of all time: Cody, Bodacious, Cooter, Majik, Sadie, Havoc, Hank, and now “Barney the Under Dog”. I will have you know sir, that not every dog is good enough to get their picture on the wall of fame!
Well, I thought I would give ya'll an update. On Dec 16, Barney turned 1 year old, and we had a birthday party for him, only he didn't get to eat any of the cake. He had his picture taken with Santa Claus at Christmas. On Saturday January 10, 2009, Barney lost his fight with kidney disease. It may have been his time to go, but it was way to early for me. He is buried in the back yard underneath of the cherry tree. Edited by swgraham 2009-01-11 8:10 PM |

Elite 3067 Cheesehead, WI | Subject: RE: Barney died this weekend Swgraham - what a beautiful story of love! It brought tears to my eyes. Losing a pet is heart breaking but knowing they had a good life while in our care can ease the sorrow. Barney is in no pain now and probably smiling down on you. My brother in law adopted a runt German Short Hair. She's the sweetest dog! She has crippled /malformed back feet and all her legs are stunted in height so she is the height of a corgy and has to drag her back feet. She thinks she's a big dog and can swim like a fish though. Her life is pretty much like any dog but she just can't do stairs too well and little kids have lots of questions about what happened to her. If not for my BIL, little Sophie probably would have been euthanized. I'm sorry for your loss. |

Champion 6285 Beautiful Sonoma County | Subject: RE: Barney died this weekend My dear friend Dave has to part with his 12 year companion Rufus earlier this week as well. Rufus was the smartest dog in the world, and was there for Dave through some very hard and challenging times. I'm sorry that Barney had to leave so soon. I hope that he and Rufus and all the other beloved doggies are up in Doggie Heaven, having a huge game of fetch! |

Master 1669 "Home of Superman" | Subject: RE: Barney died this weekend WOW what a story. Thank you for giving Barney a last name. Although he may have had a short life it was a great one because of you. He got a chance to live like all dogs should. Knowing that he would always have plenty of food, what it feels like to have the wind in our face while hanging out a car window, being able to play, having a nice warm bed to sleep in, but most of all what it felt lilke to be loved. I'm getting teary eyed just typing this. You are a better person for giving him a life.

Champion 5868 Urbandale, IA | Subject: RE: Barney died this weekend This story brought tears to my eyes as I lost my great dog Mischa in July from kidney failure. After 13 years together, she was the one person that I always knew I could count on. There is a special place in heaven reserved for folks like you that rescue dogs. You have my deepest sympathies as Barney has found his newest home with all the other great dogs that have gone before him. I hope he meets Mischa soon and they become great friends. |

Expert 932 Madison | Subject: RE: Barney died this weekend I can see Barney "The Under Dog" Graham smiling in that picture! What joy you brought to that little dog's life. He would have surely had a much shorter and less happy life without you. I just lost my dear friend, George in Decemeber after almost 15 years. He will welcome Barney with open paws into his next forever home. Although Barney was with you a much shorter time, I know the impact he had on your life. He looks like he deserves that hall of fame picture. Sympathies to you and thanks for rescuing Barney.
