Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Just curious as to what's peoples threshhold is for gas prices per gallon. I just got gas this morning and paid $2.49 for 87. It's getting pretty crazy out here in Cali. I was thinking about getting a hybrid, natural gas, electric, or taking metro or something as an alternative. Edited by auto208562 2005-03-29 12:54 PM |

Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I guess I don't exactly get the question.... threshold before what? And in a place like Ft. Collins, it's difficult to choose an alternative. There's a bus system, but it would take about 1.5 hrs to get to work. I bike to work a few times a week in the summers, but that's limited by my courage threshold. I have to wake up feeling brave to be ready for that commute! :-P |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hey from Northern Cali, Cheapest gas I have seen is $2.27. I use this as an excuse to ride my bike more, specifically for riding to and from work. I live in a suburb of Sacramento that is approximately 20 miles from the office (downtown Sac). So I take advantage of my distance from work by commuting by bike on the American River Trail. Great way to get some mileage in. Now if it would only stop raining! But when it rains, like today, I take light rail. A nice short 2-mile run in the rain beats driving, IMO. Anything that gets me away from driving my Jeep in an urban setting I consider a good thing. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I was looking into getting one of the Turbo Diesel VW's (either the Bug, Jetta, or Golf). Close to 50 MPG Highway. Plus BioDiesel is springing up around me. That and you can always convert it to run on Veggie Oil: http://www.greasecar.com/ Edited by Rower 2005-03-29 1:37 PM |

Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() The threshhold being what gas price before giving up the car and finding another way to commute. kimj81 - 2005-03-29 10:17 AM I guess I don't exactly get the question.... threshold before what? Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() If the Train and Bus service on long Island were more frequent. I would definatley be using public transport. But there is a 3.5 hour gap for trains when I want to commute, so I would either get to work at 6AM (I would have to be up at 4:30am just to catch that train), or be at work at close to 9AM which is unaccaptable. |

Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I'd never give up having a car entirely! Well, unless I lived in a big city with good mass transportation, but that's not likely to happen anytime soon! However, there are a lot of ways to scale back one's driving without throwing out the car entirely. So I don't know what my vote is... When I'm in the market for a car again, I'll definitely be looking hard at hybrids and hopefully other alternative fuels will be more developed by then. |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Up here in Nova Scotia we are paying $.959/litre - that's $3.63/gallon. The thing that annoys me most is that the price up here does not make sense - cost of oil goes up - so does the gas by up to eight cents a litre. Cost of oil goes down - gas stays the same or may drop a cent or two. In January we were paying .749/litre - that's more than a 20% increase in a quarter. It's also rather off putting that we ship gas refined in Nova Scotia to Prince Edward Island where it sells for less. We also ship it to Maine and it sells for less there as well. And, to top it all off, I just read the other day that of the tax that we pay on gas that is supposed to go towards maintaining roads - only about 8% is reinvested - the worst in the G8! The US is in second last with something like 40%! Grrr! Shane Can't wait until I live close enough to work to bike/run on a regular basis - right now the round trip is 150km. |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Another Canuck chipping in here. Taxes on gas, cigarettes, and liquor are much higher in Canada than the US, as is true for most of the world. This does not seem to have a significant effect on consumption. I suspect that the threshold, if it exists, is much higher. |

molto veloce mama ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() how about an 'i don't drive' option? we used our car on sunday, but otherwise its been parked for almost a week. my husband drives to work in the winter, but bikes to work as often as he can. i've never had a drivers' license, so i've always walked, bussed, or biked. |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() We don't have an option. Our city is so isolated, the closest we are to anything is either Minneapolis or Winnipeg, and both are 7 to 7-1/2 hr drive. But around town I bike when I can (Not in winter) or walk. I have a new vehicle bought in 2003 and it only has 14,000 km !! |

Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() $3 a gallon, fond memories. try coming over this side of the atlantic - UK petrol price is already over $6 per gallon (OK, so that's patrly because the dollar's not worth the paper it's printed on at the moment) edit: oh yes, we're all still driving everywhere anyway, so will you I expect. No one will pay the money to make the significant changes to our infrastructure to enable any serious alternatives for mid/long distances and load carrying Edited by andyc 2005-03-31 8:37 AM |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Here in the Atlanta area, it is spread out. There are a few people that carpool and use alternative means but almost every car you see has a single (1) person in it. We love our freedom and cars are a part of that. We will pay whatever we have to in an effort to maintain that freedom of movement. I'll pay what I have to, to fill up my gas guzzling truck. I don't like it, but I do carpool and will hopefully be able to ride to work 1 - 2 times a week soon (if I can find a good route). Unless we have a load of something to move or pickup, the truck stays parked alot more than it used to. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I finally hit my threashold. Realized that my car gets 16 miles to the gallon and needs super at 2:45 p/gallon in Phoenix. Plus 50 bucks a month for parking. At a 27 mile commute...its about 210 bucks a month to sit in traffic. So I traded in my parking for a free bus pass..and am mixing up riding to the park and ride then riding the bike home...or other alternatives...I can get some good rides in, and help save money and the environment. Golly...I'm such a good person!!!!! (today is my first day) |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I just recently started driving again. Managed without my own car for years - used bus, train, and bike. Now I'm consulting, so have to drive. I guess my treshold relates to my need for an income. Oh, well. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hmm I don't know the conversions at all. but over here in Perth, Aust our Petrol varies from 90c to $1.10 per litre. (its been around the dollar mark for the last couple of months) If someone else can do the maths or tell me the conversions. I ride my bike to work when I can. But our public transport system isn't teh best here so driving is pretty much the only option most of the time. |

Master![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Maybe the high prices of gas will force SUV-loving Americans to abandon their environmentally-polluting, ginormous, take up 2-parking spots CARS!!! Sorry, I just can't stand SUV's. I drive a tiny, reliable Acura Integra, and have for 5 years, and have never paid more than $24 (most recently) to fill up. When I go the gas station, all I can do is laugh at the guys in the Ford Excursions, who are still there filling up, 10 minutes after I've left! What posesses people to get that big of a car? Someone please tell me! |

Someone please tell me! Well, I drive a Jeep Wrangler which gets between 15-17 mpg. I drive an SUV because it satisfies my needs and wants. I realize many people by an SUV as a status symbol; particularly those Hummer H2s with street tires, what is up with that? But people buy what people want. If people want to drive a genormous SUV, let them. As for me, I am happy riding my bike to work and driving my Jeep on the weekends to save on gas. And I get a workout too! |

It is still early here, and Friday. That price is little higher than what I have seen here in Sacramento with the cheapest being $2.27 per gallon. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Cool thanks for translating it Cityplanner! I would still be thinking about it I think! Wow thats quite a difference in price between the US and here. It costs me around $35 - $40 to fill up my car. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() April 4th 6:30 a.m EST. Paid $2.03 per Gallon for 87 at a Shell station in Hackettstown New Jersey. I drive a 1998 Honda Civic which gets 32 MPG. My commute is 28 miles one way. Weekly expense for gas is approx $18.00 My threshold would be double that amount. I use to have a Yamaha XT350. It got 40-45 miles per gallon, so that purchase could happen again... |
