Subject: tri bike to road bike fit - same manufacturer

Due to a recent bike-totalling crash, I am shopping for a new bike on the cheap.  I was previously riding a 58cm P2C (fit by a FIST certified fitter), and have a potential deal for a used soloist frameset also in 58 inches.

I would plan to set the bike up as a normal road bike without aero bars.  I am 6'2" tall if that helps anyone.  On my P2C I rode with the saddle as far forward as it would go, leading me to believe I barely made the 58 and almost needed a 56.

Given the saying [wives tale??] that you are usually the same size road bike as a tri bike, or maybe one size larger, my gut feeling is that the 58 cm soloist should work for me.

I appreciate any insights, short of going to get fit for the road bike which is not currently feasible financially.  My goal is to get into a good quality cheap road bike for as little as possible, and then begin saving for a new P2C.

Thanks,
Josh

Typically you go up 'a size' from Tri to Road, but really you should see if it fits before buying it.

Gerrard at Cervelo has said that most people will ride the same size bike in their line.  I am just a touch over 6'2" and ride a 58 P2C and Soloist (was fit for the Soloist and took my chances on the P2C).  I *think* I could probably ride a 56 P2C as well.  My best guess is that the 58 Soloist will be a good fit for you.

x2: this has been my personal experience (52 tri bike, 54 road bike).

It totally depends on the manufacturer. I have a 47cm Felt FW3 road bike and a 50 cm Felt B12 Tri bike. Both were professionally fit and both are the correct size for me based on the bike itself.

Go figure.

My too.  Which is good because I need a 63 or larger road frame and they don't make larger than 61cm tri bikes (stock).  But I'm still able to ride in the forward position!

Offhand, I would say that the 61cm Soloist would be a better fit for you but not knowing your body structure, that is impossible to gauge with any degree of accuracy.  The surest way to know what size is to go to a Cervelo dealer and get fitted.  I am 6 feet tall but have relatively short legs and a long torso.  I ride a 58cm road bike and a 56cm Cervelo P2SL.  I have been fitted for a 58cm Soloist Team (S1).
