Subject: WWCOJD--Shady Writing Job

As everyone knows 'cause I keep saying it--I lost my main job and am totally broke, so am looking hard for other work.

There are two academic writing companies nearby that I know will snap me up in a heartbeat because of my exemplary qualifications. They're close (to pick up assignments, important 'cause I don't have a car, and I can do most of the work from home), they pay well, and for what they do, they're reputable.

My problem is the work itself. Essentially, I would be writing papers for students who can afford to buy them.

What these companies do is provide "model" term papers to students for purposes of "research." Yes, the students sign a (useless) contract saying they will not misappropriate the papers, but it's pretty obvious what's going on.

This is ideal work for me that I can pop out whizz-bang and will keep the roof over my head and food in my stomach. But ... I just have this little nagging voice that says, "It's not right."

Do I listen to my heart, or to my stomach? I would never judge someone who was truly in need if they, for example, stole a loaf of bread, so how is this really different?

As one who's been out of work since Januray, I'd still say no. Ethics are ethics. If you're a talented writer, there are opportunities out there if you really network and dig. Besides, would you put it on your resume and tell the world you've done this after the fact? Sounds like it would hurt you there too.

Who said anything about putting it on a resume...I wouldn't want to add another story to your other thread....

You're a talented writer. And... but... uh..... Well, I understand the dilemma here..... (And if you need to do it, well, Yodi needs her dog food!) What about turning your writing talents in a different direction though?

For example, what if you read some current journal articles and summarize them for a popular-magazine? In other words, read a technical article about nutrition or sports, and turn into an interesting summary for a health magazine.....

Or maybe you could write up local events/sports for your newspaper?

Your fiction writing is great too. So that might be another direction to go in. Actually, you have plenty of TRUE stories that are fascinating, too.

I really think you have answered your own question....but like you...I would never judge someone who was truly in need.  Only you can decide if you fall into that category right this moment.

You've got to take of yourself... and like I said, its not like this is illegal, and if you take my Cliffs notes angle, a *smart* student would edit the paper so that it looks like THEY wrote it if they were going to submit it. Hell, in graduate school, we took notes of the the books we had to read for each other because the reading load was such there was no way one person could gobble it all down, and that was one of the purposes of the classes - to teach us to work together in teamwork.

Times have changed alot since I was in HS and college.  Any student thinking they can get away with plagiarism nowadays are kidding themselves.  Most schools and universities now use services such as http://turnitin.com.   That has evolved into other services such as iThenticate and crosscheck which are now starting to be used by publishers of scientific/scholarly material.  In order to "fool" these systems you have to replace about every other word.  By that time I'm not so sure it is plagiarism any more.  ;-)

With that in mind, I'm surprised there are companies like the one Triya mentions still in business.  Doubt they will be for long!

I appreciate everybody's viewpoints. Please, keep 'em coming! Clearly I need all the help I can get .

"Real" writing jobs, including freelance, are really, really tight right now. Yes, there's always a need for talented writers, but right now the writers are many and the opportunities few.

It's also end of the term for lots of schools now, so I could begin right away and the work would be plentiful.

It sounds like you know it's wrong deep down and that it's not something you're comfortable with.

Even despite all this, I can understand that you need a job.  I have a list of companies that I wouldn't work for unless I was desperate and didn't have another choice.  If that's the case, you have to do what you have to do.

Like Jen said, if you're desperate, then do what you gotta do. But I wouldn't work for a company that basically aids and abets plagarism, which is against the rules of EVERY academic institution in this country. It'd be one thing if you were taking students' papers and editing them, etc, but to flat out write them; no way, I wouldn't do it.

I'll weigh in here with perhaps a different perspective. I serve on the Academic Integrity Board at my school. In that role I help adjudicate cases of cheating and plagarism. We rely on several tools to catch those who would turn in the work of others as their own.

When we catch a plagarist, we do not care about the source of their stolen material. What matters to us is that the plagarist or cheater actually violated out Academic Integrity guidelines. In other words, what people do with the material they use to compile their papers is up to them. If they do something hinky, it is them we're going to bust.

Kids will turn in whole pages lifted straight from other web pages, and vocabulary that is clearly not their own.

I suppose my bottom line is that it is a job that will pay your rent and put food on the table. It's an unplesant job to be sure, but times are tough...

Take it if you think you can stand it, but keep looking.
We're all rooting for you.

Tough decision - morality vs not going on welfare or starve and live on the streets.

Your welfare is first and foremost important.

You have many choices:
A). The job that you described with good money.
B). Working 3rd shift cleanup in a food processing plant which pays less.
C). Working in a fast food joint and getting paid well under your potential.
D). Making a mint by selling your body to strangers for "services".
E). Remain unemployed until you get the "right" job.
F). Other (and there are so many to list).

I don't believe there really is a moral issue here, personally, from the job that you have a chance to get.

A big *MELON PRESS* to you, do what you need to do, and make the most of it.

Hoping the best for you, Yanti.

  • .. It'd be one thing if you were taking students' papers and editing them, etc,....

  • Hm, this ^^^ got me thinking.... Is there a college (2 yr or 4 yr) nearby? You have a bachelor's degree in biochem, right? (Or something like that, if I recall correctly?) Maybe you could teach labs. Is there a community college nearby that's looking for part-time adjuncts?

Or what about tutoring high school or college students? (You could have the kids come to your home, or set up the meeting at nearby, as in biking/walking distance.)

OK. That's it. I'm out of ideas for now.

she's not doing anything illegal... its not like they are asking her to sell drugs on the corner..  its easy to say that you wouldn't do it when you aren't in the situation of being unemployed and have the job opportunity in front of you..

i say take the job and enjoy the money...
