Subject: Do the race even though I'll be bringing up the rear?

Okay, so I got the bright idea to look up some finishing times for my Duathlon coming up on May 7th. Wow, bad idea. I have not trained to the level that I probably should have by now, and had I not skipped the month of March, this would probably not be an issue. It's a 5K-20K-5K event. Based on my current personal best 5K times (or even using my personal best only 10K time), I will be seriously behind. I am unlikely to finish the first 5K in less than 30 minutes, with my current biking ability, I'm looking at 60min or so for the 20K bike ride, and again, at least 35 minutes for the second 5K.

Those aren't bad times. At least I don't think so considering the amount of training effort I've been putting in. And I don't mind being a BOP'er (well, not too much anyway). But those times put me at the very back (only 3 people with longer times than that). In 2003 (the year I have results for), that would have put me 25 minutes behind the last girl in my age group. (I don't believe there is any bike cut-off.)

I don't see making substantial progress in the next 3 weeks. Have I bitten off more than I can chew? Should I skip this one? Or am I selling my training short. Will three more weeks of running/biking really make that much of a difference?

The fact is, I will probably do this race anyway, since hubby is doing it too, and, well, I paid for it. But I need to be realistic about what my results are likely to be.

Go to the race and have fun. Enjoy being there, getting some exercise, and hanging out with the other racers. You'll also get experience, and know what to change and do differently for future races.

Having been last and next to last in races, I would say do it.  You need to experience the feeling of being in a race and the energy that is there.  Don't worry about times right now.  I think the race sounds kind of fun and I still hate running   Good luck!

totally do it. it's all about doing YOUR best. whenever I catch myself feeling bad or comparing myself to others, I ask myself, "yeah, but do they get to come home every day to a beautiful woman who thinks they hung the moon and who can make their toes curl at can given moment?"

perspective. it works.

Okay, between this quote:

bear screaming at me, and all the other great advice, I'm going to stop wasting energy complaining about how much I suck, and get on my flippin' bike. Even if I can't improve my times, I can improve my ability to enjoy the race. Besides, maybe seeing my &*^ slow time will inspire someone looking at the results to say "Hey, I should try this. Not everyone there is a hard-bodied 20-something phenom"

you`ll never never know, if you never give it a go!
I think you`ll be surprized how much faster you`ll push yourself during the race. At the end you`ll be so happy you did it, at least you know all us here at BT will cheer you on!

Go for it! Now from my one and only race experience this past weekend (sprint tri), I realized how easy it would have been for me to back out...I am not a runner, I am not a swimmer, and I am not a cyclist. BUT lucky for me, once I paid the entry fee, I was committed. My goal was not to come in last in my age group after seeing the past year's results. I knew this would be a challenge. Young and old passed me in each part of the course, but I learned a tremendous amount! I even came close to DNF because I did not drink enough and my body did not want to keep jogging (it may have looked like an exaggerated walk), but lucky for me, there was a lot of support from the spectators, volunteers, and other competitors. It was inspiring!

Good luck! Have fun!

What else are you going to do on Saturday May 7th? Sleep in maybe? Go to McD's for a 5 omlet bagel breakfast with hash browns and a 48 ounce diet cola? I THINK NOT!!!!

Do the race. Do your best. Have fun. No worries.

That attitude is far and away the most important thing needed to get across the finish line. Keep that and you're golden. Lose it and you're screwed.

You are being self conscious. Suppose you were the only one in the race, all by your lonesome....would you care about the finishing times? This is your own private war. Forget about the others. Sounds like you think you can finish. That's plenty of reason to start

unless your age group is the last to leave, you probably won't be anywhere near the last to actually finish

not that it really matters . someone has to be last.

everyone out there will respect you for doing it - period.

As us50090 says, it's all about yourself. My log motto is "Triathlon at 44 - racing against myself". That's the only one I want to beat, everytime. Everybody else in the race is part of the my support group, whether they know it or not.

See, that's MY philosophy. I am very surprised by the number of people who talk about OTHER people's times. What other people? You mean the ones who are there to keep me company and cheer for me? Cause that's all they are to me. The first time I do ANY event, it is for fun and experience, that's the cake event. Every time after that (on exactly the same event only), I am racing against myself. People might say that means I am not a competitive person. THE HELL I'M NOT! I want to kick my own ASS, sister!

So what are you worried about? That someone on the sidelines might laugh or something because you're bringing up the rear?
I agree that DFL is so much better than DNF or DNS.
Read "The Man in the Arena" T Roosevelt speech, don't worry about it, and go have fun.

My first karting race weekend, by some small miracle I made the feature for my class.  You know what, I got lapped, and wasn't anywhere near competitive in that final race of the day.  But you know what.  I would have rather been in the feature and gotten lapped then being one of those who loaded up early and went home.

"DFL beats DNF beats DNS

Any questions? "

My question - what does DFL mean? Dead effing last?

I would do the event. I started out in tri doing DFL at sprint distance. Have sinced progressed to DFL at olympic, 0.5 iron and 0.75 iron. Goal for this year is to DFL IM USA in Lake Placid. I almost chickened out of my first race 5 years ago. I'm so glad I did not, because I've found a whole new interest and lifestyle that has paid big health dividends.

I realise that not everyone can DFL and feel OK about it. But I've never minded - and I've met a lot of nice folks at the back of the pack. Do yourself a favor and follow through on your commitment to do the race. You might find it invigorating and inspiring.

Good luck!

Bill,

Your DFL in 1/2IM beats a WHOLE LOTTA' PEOPLE. Most people wouldn't even try to do a 1/2IM or an IM. So when I cross the finish line at my 1/2IM this September below the cutoff time that's all I care about. Who the hell cares if I'm last, I'm first before anyone who didn't tri!
