Hi everyone

This seems like a silly question but lately I've had a lot of trouble keeping my bidons clean. They always seem to have a smell to them and some have on occasion grown mould! Yuck! I always clean them straight after use and dry them. I've tried scrubbing, detergent, bleach, these all work a little but the smell is still there ... bleh.

It seems worse since I started using High 5 4:1 drink powder, I wonder if theres something in that that just sticks to the plastic.

Any thoughts are appreciated.

I figured it wasn't a bidet but I have no idea what a bidon is

I'd imagine it's a bike bottle The only thing I know to do is have enough that I leave them topless for about a week so they dry out and destink.

As long as you clean them, don't smell them..problem solved.

If you're using a bleach mixture its gonna kill anything that's alive in there

Open and rinse them as soon as you finish a training session.  After washing them (by hand or in a dishwasher), allow them to dry upside down on a drying rack so the air can circulate up in.  I've found mine will get moldy too if I let them sit for only a few hours with even watered-down sports drink in them during the summer months.

If you wash them by hand, get a bottle brush - looks like a toilet brush, but smaller and not made for toilets That works well at scrubbing down the insides.

Can pick them up at places that sell baby stuff usually, used for cleaning baby bottles out.

I notice that anything besides plain water tends to penetrate the plastic to a degree in some "bidons".  So, if I ride with anything besides plain water, after rinsing, I completely fill the bottle with tap water and leave it uncapped and sitting for several hours or overnight.  This seems to allow the adhered sugars, etc., to dissolve back into the water.  Then rerinse and drain your bidon upside down (on a wire rack or something that allows it to breathe) as others have noted.  Works great.

Try storing them with the lid off and maybe cleaning with baking soda.

After awhile, maybe a year or so, you just have to replace them as the black yuck (mold) grows.  I can usually keep the bottles clean, but the have to replace the caps.  Mainly speaking about fuel belt bottles here, but applies to regular cyling bottles also.

diluted bleach, just don't make it too strong or it tastes like you're drinking pool water out of the bottle...err...bidon.

edit: Just so I'm clear, I meant rinse the bottle in diluted bleach. It sorta sounded like I meant drink it.

I just throw mine in the dishwasher when I'm done, and haven't had a problem.  Of course, I end up collecting so many from races, expos, sponsors, etc. that I end up throwing them away after a year or two.

Sorry I thought bidon was a commonly used word. Maybe only in Oz LOL. Yes I meant bike water bottles
