Lance Armstrong will retire from professional cycling after this summer's Tour de France, ending one of the great careers in all sports.

"Ultimately, athletes have to retire ... the body doesn't just keep going and going," Armstrong said Monday at a news conference.

The 33-year-old Texan will attempt to win his record seventh straight Tour de France in July. Before Armstrong, Miguel Indurain's five straight Tour de France wins were the record. No other rider has won five overall.

Armstrong's streak of six straight titles, along with his inspirational recovery from testicular cancer, has made him a superstar in the sport and an international celebrity.

Armstrong's possible retirement plans had become the focus of growing speculation as he spoke in recent months that he wants to spend more time with his three children and in his campaign against cancer.

Armstrong says he is "100 percent committed" to his decision to retire and that he will not be participating in any other races after July 24 — the scheduled end of the Tour de France.

The announcement came on the eve of Armstrong's defense of his Tour de Georgia championship. The six-day, 648-mile event he uses as a training tool for the Tour de France begins Tuesday.

His new two-year contract to race for the Discovery Channel team requires he compete in just one more Tour de France.

"I hope to win one more Tour de France," he said.

He has said previously if he retires he would amplify his high-profile role as a cancer survivor.

Armstrong's relationship with rock star Sheryl Crow has also made him the focus of the tabloids and paparazzi.

"Sheryl, you've been an amazing woman. For someone who is the queen of rock n' roll, you've been a great cycling fan ... a great teammate," he said.

If anyone is going to the last stage of the Tour de Georgia in Alpharetta,  Is there a good place to see the action?  I believe it ends with 4 laps so it should be pretty exciting.  Plus it's Lance's last hurrah in the states.

thanks

I heard the rumor on the TV news this morning. He's had a legendary run of it, but all good things come to an end. Really hope he goes out a winner this year.

This is a site where people who are going to the TdG can get advice, meet up, etc. It's been set up by a group who also runs a Tour de France site that was invaluable for me and my wife last year when we went. It's a Yahoo message board, so if you have a Yahoo acct you can get on and ask q's or whatever, but if you're not a member, I think you can still get on and read posts. Have fun at the race, I wish I was going! Especially now.

Lance isn't sitting on good form. His heart isn't in it. The Year of CSC is upon us.

In accordance with the Prophecy.

zakk, zakk, zakk. Haven't you learned that when Armstrong's mind is set on something, it's a done deal. And now he's said this is his last Tour! CSC will have to wait until next year just like everyone else. Besides Kloeden is the number 2 out there not Basso, and don't forget Cunego. Check the crystal ball, the Prophecy's got to be calling for next year.

Oh poor dorkboy! That hot, arid Arizona heat has gone straight to your head! O the horror!

The mind may be made up, but the body unwilling (read: not properly trained due to 'rockstar' lifestyle)

And, to put Kloeden ahead of Ulrich before the tour is testament to your 3 brain cells all fighting

zakk you definitely sound like Ullrich by claiming victory in April and pointing to Armstrong's lack of form and commitment. But alas like Ullrich's ever expanding wasteline your prognostications are bloated and made up of the stuff that packs those sausages he loves a little too much.

You're right about the AZ heat rotting what's left of my mind, and it's 2, not 3, brain cells that survived my college years, but not even those set backs allow me to bet against Armstrong.

BTW - you've officially become my favorite poster on this site! So, I'll post this picture of you're favorite CSC rider at last year's AdH time trial stage...oh yeah and the winner's too.

The Tour de Georgia ends this Sunday not more than 3 miles from my house.  Where will I be?  In St. Petersburg at St. Anthony's Triathlon.  The timing couldn't be worse.

dorkboy: living so close to Vegas you must know the #1 rule at the sportsbook

Never....EVER....bet your heart

which is exactly what I'm betting Lance doesn't have!

It would be hard to tune out the kids. If my GF (whom I racefor) fell out of favor with me due to racing, training, etc. It would be tough to carry on. With kids and the time committments he has, it must be terrible

I like Lance, I think he's more a product of US Postal's hard work the individual greatness, but losing Landis, Ekimov has been a pro since the Tour of Ancient Rome, Heras and others are long gone. Kincapie can only do so much in the mountains. Chectchu is only going to do so much, and Azevedo should be leading his own team.

so, CSC will rule supreme!

I'll be sad to see him go, but I think its better to see him go out on top... The 2006 tour is going to be exciting with no lance, and several up and coming folks like Jan Ullrich, Ivan Basso, and several others...

CSC will have their day but not this year. This year Texas will have their last HOORAAAA. There is nothing worng with Eki's performance, we all wish we could ride a bike as well as he does. It doesn't matter if he is a 100 years old his performance is nothing short of fantastic.

What does Azevedo needing to be leading another have to do with Lance winning? What about Rubiera, Cruz, Beltran, Michael Berry? He won it this year without Heras. As a matter of fact Heras hasn't done much since he left Postal.

Betting with your heart. Carnial Sin #1 in betting.

He's done. Unless he can get on form in record time, its over. He has said himself he is behind. Sure he can recover, but all thosehours he's on Opera, someone else is busting their ass in the mountains. When he's busy with all these press confrences, another is doing inverval work that is measured in hours.

It has been foreseen.

True...he's out and growing.

Actually, this year he looks good, but we'll see how he races in the next 8 weeks. His coach is actually complimenting him this year which is a new tactic for him. I think this will be a very exciting TdF and I'm looking forward to it.

What everyone should be lamenting is not Lance retiring from cylcing per se, but that since he's retiring OLN will jump off the "Cyclism" bandwagon and we'll be back to relying on internet feeds.

I liked his answer to the last question where he was asked: "How did that decision come about to quit after this year's Tour de France?"

He answered, "Did you have to use the word "quit"?... "

Just goes to show the kind of mentality you need to have if you want to be a champion like Lance. You have to remove the word "quit" from you vocab.
