In conjunction with the "What do you do for work/career", I've noticed (and am unfortunately included in) a growing group of unemployed/furloughed BTrs. So yes, let us have a support group. Networking and link sharing is to be encouraged! Resume swap, perhaps? Sharing of good news?

So, if anyone is looking for a corporate trainer (which, as I stated in the OT is my goal).  I have resume and am willing to forward

I haven't been working since Mid-March and I get tired of hearing the word "overqualified"..  I swear if I hear that one more time I may punch somebody..

I am right there with you. I'm "overqualified" for jobs that I'll do for a paycheck (grocery, gyms, secretarial work, post office etc) and I'm underexperienced for jobs in my field (hence why I volunteer at 3 different museums and 1 history institution). The other problem is that people with 20+ years of experience are also gunning for entry level jobs, and I can't compete with that.

I know some people say "don't put your advanced degrees on an application", but I have a really strong objection to not putting my degrees on an application, like education is something to be ashamed of. I'm very proud of my degrees, and a lot of sacrifices were made in order to achieve them and I think denying that I have them is a bit dishonest/not really on.

ACK! Wish I'd known that before I reserved elsewhere.  Would love to help out another laid off Robyn.

I'll happily report that after 1 month of being laid off I will start a new job later this week.  There is hope out there people!  I found my job on monster.com, found the last one on Craigslist.  I am also using LinkedIn extensively for networking and secured a reference via that from a former CEO of my last company.

^^ Good point about the LinkedIn. I've been using that a lot. Perhaps we should start a LinkedIn connection for BTrs? My profile is here

I was laid off in January!  I'm in media sales.  Selling advertising in this economy...not so great.  I've had interviews but living in SF, there is a ton of very qualified, unemployed people here.  I'm open to other sales jobs.

I think this may be self-defeating.  If you put advanced degrees that are not relevant to a job, it can look to an employer that you are only in the job for the short term, till something more suitable comes along.  Which may well be true, but when there are lots of people competing for the job, I think the employer may want to hire people who he/she believes will stick around.  So you can be honest and unemployed, or deceptive via omission and pay the bills.

For all of you, answer this question. What do you like to do? No bull on this!!  what do you like? Where do you spend your time? What do you think about? What are you passionate about?  Next are others passionate about what you are interested in? And finally how can you help those people?  If you have something you are passionate about and have an idea how to help others to pursue their passion then you have your answer to unemployment.  Go forth and create.

Laid off skilled tradesman for the past 7 months who has no intention going back to the factory life.
I've been keeping myself buisy writing more songs helping other starving artist like myself by offering cheeper recording rates. I'm also delving into writing jingles for radio and television. However it hasn't produced any fruit just yet.

Released from the auto industry in March.  I love all the free time, but hate not having disposable income.  I also have an advanced degree and very proud to display it, but with little experience I am finding it extremely difficult to get a decent job.  I've been looking in other states, lately.  Now is as good a time as any to leave Michigan.

Good luck to all.

Unemployed since March 3rd. Totally unexpected. Showed up to work that morning and got the "we are downsizing and your position no longer exists".

Going into business for myself now. Screw it!

I'm gonna make an excellent errotic fiction writer...

LOL!

Not too long ago, I had a friend who moved overseas .. she could not find a job, and ended up writing lesbian porn to fund her travels (she is neither a lesbian, nor a writer by trade) ... hilarious story. Hot stuff, too.

This is how it happened for me.  Showed up for work one morning, before I even sat down I was called into a meeting with my boss and the CEO of the company.  I knew before anything was said what was happening.  Good for you for going into business for yourself!
