Subject: What is a Donk?
I am new to this world, and I see "donk" or "donkey" referred to a lot in the race reports I've been reading.  What does this term mean?  As someone that has played a lot of poker, "donk" is usually a very derogatory term, meaning a bad or low level player.  I am really hoping that it's not the same disrespectful meaning when it comes to Tris.

A Wisconsin group of triathletes that have colonised otherwise healthy tri states.  Seriously.

It's not a derogatory term.

Im sorry, I thought it was more well known than it is. Someone from the group themselves should chime in, but it's a pseudo tri-club based in Wisconsin that are formally the 'tri-donkai' group. They race and train together, and informally call themselves 'donkai-nation', or 'the donks' for short.

As they have raced in other events around the US, and as other people have traveled to race in the HHH and IMWI - both Wisconsin events, the group has grown to be a larger group lots of the donkeys chatter on BT, thus the references to them in Race Reports, and especially the Wisconsin formum.

That's all I've got, maybe one of the WI crew could join in.

It's a group of triathletes from the Wisconsin (and Illinois?) area that call themselves Donkeys.  They have outfits with donkey heads on them, etc.

Why am I the one answering this?

The Donkey's are just a group of triathletes that are generally from the southern wisconsin area. The "colonization" comment means that people from different parts of the country have adopted the "donkey lifestyle" (RudeDog55, among many others).

Donkey lifestyle is very simple, being stubborn and refusing to give up, "following the carrot". Read many of our sig lines for an example.

Instead of wearing jerseys with sponsors logos, etc. The donkeys wear jerseys signifying their donkey status. Thge most common being a picture of a donkey on the front, and a carrot on the back.

Led by jszat and morey1, its a group of great, but questionably stylish, people that love tris... a group that has made a donklaration to support each other in and outside of triathlons... a group that some may deem to be a "bit off"... possibly due to their wearing clothes with donkey heads and carrots... or possibly because some choose to run with their bike helmet on (i'm assuming no one swims with their bike helmet on though)... and while there are clearly some very important rituals involving jolly ranchers and zima... it is even more important to remember the donkeys always bray and not bleat... and some day a fully nourished donkey may be lucky enough to catch the carrot through stubborn and steady training...

And we haven't just taken over the nation, but the planet, as we have at least one member over seas.

Hello, dorvaan.

As being one of the members of the Tri-Donkai or tri-donks or donkey, etc., I can give some explanation.

BT members jszat and morey1 started the fun-loving group.  Both are near the Milwaukee, WI area.

Jszat's facebook page gives some explanation -
http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=58352772412

"The Donkai keep it stubborn and steady. "

The real story was when Joe and Dan, jszat and morey1, respectively, were out on a run and happened to hear the mentor, the real, true, live donkey, bray as they were going by.  That was the inspiration that started the lively group.

The majority of the "Nation" reside in Wisconsin, but there are some members that reside in other states, too.

We even have some very recognizable tri gear to wear.

  I hope this helps.

Visit the WI forum and you'll see a number of the "Nation" posting.

Well, at least it's great that the swim is before the bike, otherwise, the helmet probably would have stayed on for the whole race, right Scott. *wink wink nudge nudge*

Tony just likes to wear 2 pairs of goggles, which is his insignia.  Quite fashionable.

Thanks to those that have given an explanation.  It was much appreciated.

I really was reading the race reports with the term "donk" as derogatory, like the poker term.  I was severely reconsidering my decision to hang around these parts, and I begin my journey to a Tri.

Knowing it's true meaning changes things substantially.

DONK has multiple meanings. Putting huge wheels on older cars makes them a DONK.
Here is DONKey kong for example. Wink

I believe they are custom, they have terrible rolling resistance though.
