Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I originally started to train for a triathlon to just lose weight, but, since i was doing the workouts i have decided to actually do a sprint on August 30th, I have never been a runner/Biker or Swimmer so it is all new to me. I am following the 13 week training schedule that i found thru this site. I currently weigh 243 lbs, 265 when i first started to train. I run a 12 minute mile, i do not know how fast i am biking but i usually can do approx 11-12 miles in 30 mins, Swimming i can just about do 25 meters without feeling like i am going to die.. I have a real hard time breathing while swimming. I do better the slower i go but i have not been able to do more than 25 meters at a pop. Is this normal progression ? Am i crazy for attempting a tri ? Should i get a swim coach? and where do i find one ? I am very stressed out about the swim part since i am not very good at it. |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I think you are on the right track. Swimming is tough technique-wise. My first suggestion was going to be to swim slower (common beginner mistake to try to swim too fast) but you already said you're doing that. Maybe try even SLOWER? Otherwise, the best thing you can do is to find a swim coach and have them look at what you are doing. It might be some simple tweak that will make all the difference.... |

Member![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Luby you sound like yoru in the same boat as me. Never been a runner, biker or swimmer. I'm on a 10 week trianing plan 3 weeks in. First time swimming i got about 25 Yards and died, actually did this for about the first week. i can strong out 100 yards now "non-stop" My works out I try and atleast do 500 yards, but after the initial 100 i'm only doing sets of 50 and some times 25 but then have to rest. Its getting better slowly but surely. Edited by hornsfan 2009-06-19 12:07 PM |

Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() swimming is hard, brother... do a search on youtube for freestyle swimming to get an idea of what the proper form is supposed to look like. there are also books and videos that teach you from scratch... i tried all that crap and my best results happened a month ago when i joined a master's swim class... ![]() good luck |

You really should probably take a lesson or two. I guess I'd look in the phone book, maybe ask around at the gym. Or, find a local kids swim team, go up to the coach and ask if they'd like to make some quick extra money. Then, when you got the basics, keep it slow and steady to start building that endurance up. You'll get there.

If you've never swum before, then yes, a coach would be a huge help. Look in the yellow pages for "swim instruction", there are probably quite a few near you. Never biked before and you can hold 22-24mph on the bike? That's pretty dmned good. John |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() congrats on signing up for your first tri!! ![]() swimming can be extremely frustrating when you are first starting out, its even more frustrating when you are doing it on your own. i would definitely look into getting private lessons. having someone else watch your stroke and give you pointers will be a tremendous help. as to where to find said lessons, if you have a community pool with a summer league swim team, i guarantee that there is at least one person there that gives private lessons, if there is a local masters swim team, contact them and ask if the coach or any of the members give lessons. are their local tri clubs? they probably have members that would give lessons too. watching swimming videos (ex. youtube) may be beneficial but it always helps to have someone watching you and picking out specific things to work on in the pool. also, more time in the water is key for improving the swim. even if you only get in for 15min at a time, its better to be in the water 4-5 times a week, then once a week for longer periods of time. "feel" for the water is a very important part of the swim and it will come along much quicker if you don't take days off inbetween swims. set goals for each swim. maybe the first week it is to swim 25m ____ times in 15 min. (take a break after each 25) then the next week, increase that number slightly, etc. also, if you are having trouble locating coach, an option for the meantime would be to have someone video tape you swimming and post it here. there are very experienced swimmers on this site and they may be able to give you some pointers just from seeing the tape. i have people ask me questions when i am swimming at local pools. if you see someone swimming laps beside you, don't be afraid to ask them for input. most swimmers are happy to help. ![]() keep us posted on the progress!! |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() For a beginning swimmer it all comes down to breathing properly. Until you are doing this, you're going nowhere fast. You must exchange air continuously. By this I mean, 100% of the time you must be breathing in or breathing out. 100% of the time. Until you are doing this, nothing else matters. For a new swimmer, "swimming" must consist of "breathing" and nothing else. You can practice in a pool, hot tub, bathtub or bowl of water. Don't worry about strokes, kicks, rotation, anything until you're breathing right. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() A relaxed pace across 25 meter pool just make you feel just like you walked 25 meters at a regular pace. If you feel like you sprinted up a hillside with a 40 pound backpack after 25 meters then you are not breathing right. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Keep at it; 18 months ago I could not swim 50 meters, today I swam my longest non stop at 4000m. Just keep at it, I hired a swim coach this year. She changed my swimming over night. Ask around for a local Tri club and join it. That will help you connect with the right people. Worked wounders for me. Keep up the great work and you will get there. |

Regular ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Don't feel alone. I've been frustrated with swimming for about a month (thats when I started). I've learned lots on this website, people are very friendly, and willing to share from their experience. Theres some great videos to be found to show you technique. I am signing up for a few private lessons this week, just for some affirmation and knowledge. I swear I looked like a drowning chicken when I first started, breathing and coordination was very difficult to grasp(Yeah I may score a standard deviation below avg). I've kept at it though. And I've seen steady improvement! This week felt so great in the pool. I can go 25 m okay, 50 and I'm breathing hard. But it's WAY better than where I came from, and I plan to get even better. It can be very annoying, but rewarding. Good luck to you. You'll get it. |

Member ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Like some others have said youtube is great resource for figuring out some techniques. I figured out to flip turn, and breast stroke watching the videos. Also, maybe taking a swim class at local community college. I think it'd be the cheapest class option too. Last fall I was in the same boat as you, and started with a beginning swim class and am now taking the intermediate one over the summer. I can do probably do about 2000 yds non stop albeit pretty slow. |

![]() It took me a long time to figure out how to swim effectively... so just keep at it and you'll get better. I have to echo what the others have said about a swim coach. If nothing else, they can look at your stroke and tell you exactly what you are doing wrong. One thing that I don't think was mentioned was swim drills. There is a whole list of them I do before I start my real workouts and it seems to have helped a lot in my swimming. Its hard for me to descibe them here, but you might try youtube for some instruction. |

Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Like everyone else said, find a coach. The other thing that many people don't mention is how important it is to spend enough time in the water that you become as comfortable there as you are walking down the street. This only comes with time. Stick with it, and you'll be amazed how you improve! |
