So, is there a good site I can go to that will give me pretty easy instructions on how I need to tighten the cable for my front derahiler (sp) because as of right now when I try to shift from the big to little chain ring but it will go from little to big...

oh this is on a P2C tri bike if that matters

any help would be great

There's nothing to it.

5mm allen wrench and either use your fingers or a pair of pliers.  Loosen the bolt on the back of the der. that clamps the cable when you have no tension on the cable (i.e. in the small ring).  Pull the cable snug, tighten the bolt.  Done.

The derailleur may be OK, but you could have some soft (flexy) chainrings - flimsy chainrings make it tough (sometimes impossible) to go from little-to-big, and no amount of deraileur tuning will help.  Been there, done that.  Just another thing to consider as you are troubleshooting...

Cheers, Chris

thanks Rick, does the adjustment need to be done with the bar end shifter in the small chainring?

Don't you have a barrel adjuster on the frame?  Just twist that to take up some of the cable stretch until it shifts properly.

Yes, you want to take all the tension off of the der.  So in the "down" position on the lever which puts it in the small chainring.

I personally don't like using the barrel adjuster for cable stretch adjustment.  It is such a quick fix to tighten the cable with the wrench that it is a no brainer to me.

x2 - I use the barrel adjuster for on road adjustment only.

Maybe it is just me but I was unaware that a bike with enternal cable routing had barrell adjusters... where in the he!! would they be located-- under the bottom bracket?

No, they are usually located at the base of your bars where the cable comes out of the bar and before it goes back into the frame.  Sometimes (rarely) they don't have them but in most of those cases it is the bike builder who did that as the factory bikes will come with them.

You may be right, looking at the photos it looks like it only has on barrel adjuster on the RD.  A 5mm hex key and a pair of pliers it is.

Not to cut in here, but Park Tool has some nice repair how-to's on their site.  Here is a section that covers shifter stuff:

http://www.parktool.com/repair/byregion.asp?catid=53

Recently had some front derailleur problems myself, turns out the problem was some slack in the cable and the derailleur was set too high on the seat tube.  Tightened up the slack and used a penny as feeler gauge to get the derailleur set right and shifting is better.  Anyway, good resource at the Park Tool website.

One other quick thought -- after you get the cable tightened up, if it still won't shift, check the high-low adjustment screws on the derailer.

I have the same symptoms, could not shift down to smaller ring from middle, but could shift up to larger (triple). Once. Then couldn't get back to the middle. Check the tension spring. Mine broke
