Subject: Does my IPod touch give me free internet?
We just got an I-pod touch as a (very nice!) gift.  Once I figured out how to play around with it I clicked on safari and it took me right to the internet.  I figured I had to pay to have internet connection.  Then later DH was playing and downloaded an album from ITunes - it had my account already in there.  So- am I paying for the internet and just don't know it yet (since they must have my credit card info int here somewhere with my ITines account) or do I get it free as long as I am near a wireless connection?

Either way, we are in love with this thing.  I know we're going to have to get another one now since we've only had it one day and have already been fighting over it!  I can't wait to learn all about the applications.

This. They have wifi antennas, but not free service.

OK - so I can use it for free wherever they have WiFi - that's good to know.  I was worried I'd start using it and they would start charging me per month like the IPhone or something!  I was just trying it out in my house so it was just using our regular wireless connection.

I have an iPhone (loooovee it) and just a word of advice. 

Sometimes wehn you connect to a free WiFi hotspot it will not appear to work (if using email or facebook etc..)  You must fire up Safari and then accept their "terms of service".  Then, all apps that use the INternet will work...

Since you connected to your internet so easily, you may want to consider a password or some encryption on your wireless router.  If you don't have this, anyone in the neighborhood can tap into your connection and possibly do bad things.  Once you set up your touch to connect to the router, you shouldn't have any other problems and it will be more secure.

See, I haven't found this to really be the case.  FREE Wi-Fi can be hard to come by sometimes...

I think free wi-fi is offered at almost every coffee shop in Vancouver (except Starbucks) and since there is at least 1 coffee shop on every corner, lots of free wifi, so I get access almost everywhere I am standing downtown.

This is why I drink coffee from Tully's rather than Starbucks. But living in Seattle there are loads of WIFI hotspots....free. There's even an app you can download to figure out where they are located near you.

 

I too love my ITouch.

Maybe if you live in a city.  But whenever I am traveling I always have my laptop so I'm looking for wi-fi.  Airports ESPECIALLY don't tend to have free wi-fi unless they are a tiny airport.  And the coffee shops in the airports don't ever have it either.  So to ME the usefulness of the iPhone is uninterrupted service...even if you can't find wi-fi you can always use the phone line.

I figure if we don't rely on it, just have it as a fun extra, then we'll be OK for now.  We barely use cellphones at all so there is no way I could justify getting an IPhone right now as much as I love them.

And now my DH has taken over this IPOD anyway - it was a gift to him and he won't give it to me!!
