Apparently, there is a huge hole in the used bike market for what I want. Anyone have any advice, I have looked on CL, ebay, ST, here, LBS, asked around.

I want a used women's bike (48 or xs). In the $400-600 range. A very basic newbie bike (path/pavement, straight handle bars, on the light side). I do 99% of my rides on dirt trails and bike paths, so I don't really want a 100% road bike because I don't think the tires can take it. But I will use it in sprints, so I don't want a heavy monster mountain bike either.

I have found new bikes that fit the bill, Specialized Ariel and Vita, Giant FCR series, and Trek FX series. I'd like secondhand one, though.

Any ideas? I've been combing the used market for almost 2 months now with no luck.

These are very very very hard to find used. I was unable to and had to buy new.

Sorry- I know not the answer you were looking for, but it is what it is. Small bikes are not as common and therefore there are not as many out there. You can look at kid's bikes, but that's probably not what you want either.

That's a very small size.  Which could work for you or against you.  In this case it is working against you because you're looking for something rare.

However, it could work for you.  My first road bike was a 47cm Bianchi.  I got it at an LBS at 10% off because it was a leftover from last season.  So that would be my suggestion to you...try to find one at an LBS who has leftover stock from last year and wants to sell it on the cheap.

I'm actually worried that when I finally try to sell my 47cm bike I won't be able to find a buyer...because there just isn't a market for that small size.

You're not looking hard enough .........

Here's a cross bike:

http://cgi.ebay.com/Kona-Jake-cyclocross-bicycle-48cm-700cc_W0QQitemZ160346378776QQcmdZViewItemQQptZRoad_Bikes?hash=item2555639218&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=65%3A12%7C66%3A2%7C39%3A1%7C72%3A1205%7C293%3A1%7C294%3A50

And I had two other road bikes that fit right into your budget but deleted them when I re-read your post about wanting more of a hybrid type for trail use.

I also got my 47 cm roadie at an end of season sale for nearly half off.  It was new but it was a great deal. Keep an eye on the classifieds for end of season sales and shows - my DBF refuses to miss the fall bike show here in Toronto but you would only know if you read the sporting related newspaper and frequented the LBS's.
