Subject: Cheap "Gatorade" substitute?
First an Introduction.  I've been lurking for about a month now, but haven't posted.  I decided to do my first tri, PBR in october, and i'm five weeks into the 16 week swim focused sprint program.  Everything is going well so far, and I have even conned 3 others to do it with me.

Now for my question.

Money is tight, and I'm looking fo a cheap recovery/sports drink.  I have been using Endurox at half strength, and cutting Gatorade with water (cheaper and better IMO).  I know there are plenty of recipes for this kind of thing, would just like to here what the experts are using.

Thanks In Advance,
Matt

I buy the powered PowerAde (you can get Gatorade too, but I don't like the
lemon/lime that much) at about any grocery store. It's much more
economical that way.

I like it because I can mix it 1/2 strength. Full strength is just
too strong.

Oh, and try beer. Also a good electrolyte drink.

If you have a Cosco or Sams Club members ship you can get canasters of powered gatorade/powerade for cheap. The one I buy makes 9 gallons. I only use it on long rides/runs (lasting more then 2 hours) and as a source of carbs in recovery drinks. They last forever and are dirt cheap when you compare the price per serving to buying it already made.

I think if you search the nutrition forum you'll be able to find a recipe for a home made gatorade alternative that would be even cheaper.

You can always buy a bottle of endurolytes and then just drink water with it.

Also, GU2O and heed also seem to cost less than Gatorade and yet taste better.

You can also go by a brewers store and get plain maltodextrin for incredibly cheap and make your own with that. Lot of recipes out there with that as a base.

I've got that one covered, hence the need for a CHEAP recovery drink.

Thats a good article, I'll give those recipes a try!  I found a couple of others using combinations of Kool Aid, Oj, sugar, salt, etc.  I'll have to start experimenting and maybe come up with my own unique recipe.

The comments brought up a good question about chocolate milk.  I had heard about drinking 1% chocolate milk for a great recovery drink, but can I use skim milk with choc syrup/powder for similar results?

Guess I probably should have posted this in the nutrition forum Undecided

Like Chile said I happen to use Thermolyte (electrolyte tablets) for training and racing and grab my calories with whatever is laying around.  Triple Sports and Tri Sports carry it.

I did a little comparison of some of the recipes you have helped me find.

I started a new thread in the nutrition forum with the results
