Subject: Clipless pedals

I'm trying to decide on yet another investment with my bike.  I currently have SPD on both my road and triathlon bike, however during a few of my longer training rides I have noticed an increase of pressure and pain on the bottom of my foot from my pedals.  My local bike shop suggested going with the Look cleat type pedals.  What does everyone recommend?

There are a lot of options.
If you want the best, and money is no object, Look Keo Carbon Ti are pretty snazzy, as are the Keo Carbons and Keo HM Ti.  The Keo Sprint, Elle and Classic are the same style (Keo Cleats), but heavier plastic and steel spindles instead of CF and titanium spindles.

If you don't mind going a little old school, there are still Look Delta cleat pedals made.  In my switch from 2 bolt cleats (crankbro.s) to 3 bolt road cleats, I went with some cheap delta cleats made by Performance.  Really cheap when on sale so if you don't like them your not out too much, but heavy with a AL body and steel spindle.

The two advantages of the Keo over the Delta is that the Keo is newer and likely to be supported longer AND the Keo has 3 distinct cleat options: 0 float, 4.5deg float, and 9deg float.  Delta only had 9deg and 0 float.  If you think fine tuning float is really important or you just want new Look pedals (i.e. not used or 3rd party), go with Keo.

It's mostly preference.  But I prefer shimano right now (only because that's what I started with).  Shimano and Look are very similar in style.

I may venture into Speedplay, only just to try something new.

I found the same thing when I started doing 30 mile rides. Started with Shimano 540 pedals and the plate on them cracked after a few months so I got Shimano Ultegra pedals and haven't looked back. I'd recommend them in a minute.

Had the same problem.  Went with the Look Keo.  Love em.

I'm a fan of Shimano Ultegra pedals too. Large platform, not too heavy and pretty durable. Hated speedplay, sold them on eBay.

Take a look at your shoes too...make sure the soles are th stiffest platform your can afford. The stiffer the shoe, for the most part they will distribute more of the pressure over a larger space on your foot and help with the numbness.

You should also examine your pedal stroke. Are you pedalling in a circle or just the down motion. Once I started focusing on my stroke, all of my numbness problems went away.
