Ahh...the every-changing course distances...let's see:

 SwimBikeRun
20070.93mi21.4mi6.2mi
20080.93mi21.4mi5.1mi
20090.93mi22.9mi5.0mi

The bike's getting longer, but the run's getter shorter...

Maybe one day, when the race grows up, it will be a true Olympic distance...sigh...

It's funny that they hang onto the strange .93 distance swim.  Which would be easiest to change.  Thinking if they wanted a slighter shorter than Oly they would make that .8 or something.

The one positive thing...I PR at every race, because every year brings with it a new and exciting distance, never before raced by mankind Turtleman participants...

(makes it really tough to compare year to year)

Don't get me wrong...it's a great race...

Am I looking for too much conformity?

The bike used to be longer, longer...and the run (except for that biazarre foray into "actual" Oly territory) has been the Loop forever. And the swim is always that same 1500 m. slog thru the swamp. Ah, i miss the days when I lived by the start and could wake up...rack my bike...and then go home for two hours.

Actually, it HAS been a true Oly distance a couple of times: 1500/40k/10k. It didn't work out real well, IIRC.

The swim is going to a bit on the nasty side. The lake is a shallow one to begin with and it was a muddy, weedy mess back in mid June with not much rain since then. Of course the plus side is you might be able to walk the whole swim!

Oh well, I still like the race because I live 2 miles away and it's my training grounds. I love being able to bike to/from the race.

The 1st year I raced, I couldn't resist walking over the sandbar.  Big mistake.  Ended up cutting my foot on the rocks.

'Swam' over it last year.  Much better.

I did get a weed hickey the 1st year.  Had a weed hang around my neck for the entire swim...

I wonder if they're going to need to re-route the swim around the sandbar.  The sandbar may probably be exposed this year...

It's on the front page of their website:

Due to low water levels in Turtle Lake, the swim course will be modified to .5 mile swim going in a counter clockwise direction. Buoys will be on the left side. See the new course maps.

There is a slight modification in the bike course at around mile 18. The left off Ash Street will be sooner (Sherwood Road) to avoid neighbor streets and take advantage of newly paved roads. The distance remains the same, but times will be faster with two fewer turns.

hello everyone. This is my fourth race but 1st time for Turtle. I noticed the swim times and especially the bike times on average are way higher than other races. I see the course is very flat. how much time (mph) do you think racers are picking up compared to an average rolling course.

thanks

Hi all, I haven't been here for quite a while. With my new job, I don't surf during the day. I am in for the Turtleman. I can't wait. It is my favorite race of the year. I was a little worried about the swim too, but it will be fine.

So, did anyone else get the email saying that there is swimmer's itch in Turtle Lake? He is hoping that they can get it cleared up by Saturday. Let's hope...

Bleh...I may skip the swim warmup.  Stay away from the shoreline.  There will be all kinds of soft gooey mud there anyway...

Good luck all.  Are we expecting rain?

Unbelievable.  Just another confirmation of our busy summer.

Get a load of this...got to Gear West and they couldn't find my confirmation.  I left the line, went out to the car, booted up my laptop and searched my bank statements on-line to find the credit card receipt as proof of registration.  Turtleman registration opened mid-March.  I found my Square Lake registration, registration for Turtleman 2008...and then it dawned on me...just before that (early March), we had the incident with credit card fraud, so I waited until all the invalid charges were removed from our account before I registered for races.  Registered for several races after that point and somehow mentally convinced myself that I registered for Turtleman...but..uh, no...FAIL...

Tomorrow starts my training for Square Lake...

I won't be racing Saturday...

GOOD LUCK TO ALL RACING SATURDAY!

I.AM.AN.IDIOT.

Actually it was a 'B' race along with Lifetime (which I REALLY enjoyed).  Swim was cut in half, and part of the race might be in the rain tomorrow, so I wasn't totally crushed.  'A' race was Liberty...which I still haven't figured out (nutrition).  Liberty will continue to be my 'A' race until I sign up for an Ironman of course.

I WILL be registering for Whistlestop this weekend and maybe a duathlon to replace Turtleman.

Any suggestions?

The temptation to sign up for IMOO 2010 would be TOO great. I am a weak man.

Great suggestion, though...can you GUARANTEE good weather?

I can definitely relate! My wife and I had been training for chisago HIM since March but she was battling some back issues so she didn't register when I did. I thought she registered herself in early June once her injury issue was resolved. She thought I registered her.

On an absolute whim, we decided to do our packet pickup the day before the race at which point we found out she wasn't registered, but thankfully they still had openings so she was able to get into the race. If we had decided to do packet pickup the day of the race she would have been out of luck!

You could try the inaugural Minneapolis Duathlon. There is also the Lakes Country Tri (sprint) up in Baxter which I've always enjoyed.
