Subject: Shorty wetsuit ok for triathlons?
I've never owned a wetsuit, but I recently returned from a lake vacation where I borrowed a friend's shorty wetsuit (I THINK it was Body Glove, but I can't remember) for water skiing, and ended up loving it so much, I swam across the lake in it one morning.

Now I'm totally sold on the idea of a wetsuit--I did my HIM last year in 64 degree water, and I dealt with it, though I was one of only two people who showed up without one--but wasn't sure what the proper style is for triathlons. I know it also depends on where you're doing your triathlons, so for my purposes: I'm doing mostly the standard northeast-area season triathlons--late spring to early fall in NJ, NY, PA, CT, DE, etc.--and I'm planning on doing IMLP 2010.

Is a shorty wetsuit acceptable for swimming or is it only meant for water sports like waterskiing or surfing and whatnot? Should I specifically look for a sleeveless one (the one I used had short sleeves and I didn't have any problems moving around in it, though to be fair, it was only a 1,200 yd OWS, so perhaps a poor indicator for IM?). Should I just go for the full suit, or is that overkill?

Thanks for the advice!

It's fine to wear, but if you are going to do more of them, especially an IM, it'd be better for you to have a swimming wetsuit, sleeved or sleeveless.

I started out using a Body Glove wetsuit years ago.  In hindsight, I think it was more of a hinderance than a benefit.  They are not really made for swimming.

I did my first two tri's in a Body Glove short wetsuit (spring suit)...they went fine (I actually won my AG in the 2nd of the two).  Not really a substitute for a tri-wetsuit, but it kept me warm (-ish) and provided some buoyancy.  Oh, and it only cost me $45.

I used a Body Glove shorty wetsuit for my first tri. It was restrictive and difficult. I wanted to rip it off. Tri wetsuits can feel tight and constrictive too at first, but the restriction in arm movement in the shorty was just unbearable for me. Of course, you said you swam across the lake in it, so if you didn't have that experience, it might be OK.
On the other hand, if you are really into tris and see yourself sticking with it, you might as well have a tri-specific, especially in the northeast. It's definitely not overkill... more like standard equipment these days. Most people are wearing tri-specific wetsuits. I have a sleeveless and like it a lot, but some also really like the full sleeve.

I can see how a sleeveless is better than a shorty. A 1,200 yard swim is hardly a long enough distance to determine if it would cause me problems, so I'll take everyone's word for it that sleeveless is better.

I haven't found any sleeveless tri wetsuits that also have short legs, too (do those even exist?). I guess I just liked the non-restrictive feeling of the shorty. Swap sleeveless for the short sleeves, I thought that would feel perfect for a longer distance swim (and it was so easy to peel off afterwards, which strikes me as very useful for tris!).

Also also, $45 sounds much nicer than $250. Argh. Why am I addicted to such an expensive sport??

Sleeveless wetsuits are great... and you wouldn't want short legs on it. The wetsuit won't restrict your legs if it goes to your ankles.

If you keep your eyes open you can find a sleeveless wetsuit for less than $240. Xterra had some on sale for $150 a couple of weeks back. Just gotta wait for a sale.

I personally rented one for my swim last weekend. At $45 a pop... even if I rented it 3 times I still wouldn't meet the $150 cost of a new one. Since I rarely do tri's with cold water swims, just made sense to rent one when I needed it.

Shop around - I bought my QR Sleeveless for about $110 at TriSports.
