Subject: Bad Pool Math

My workout started bad enough, I was planning on running but while driving to the place I run a realized I had let all of running gear at home. Ok that’s no big deal I did have my swim gear so I decided to go for a swim instead.

With no plan I go out to the pool and sit on the edge. While sitting there trying to figure out what to do I decide to try to do a 750 meter swim, now all my races to this point have 450 meter or less swims so I had never swam over 500 meters straight.  Today was the day I was going to try it.

Doing some quick math in my head.

750 / 25 =30, I need to do 30 laps and that will be 750 meters.

Well them the guy next to me who was also sitting on the edge reminded me the length of the pool was actually 25 yards and not 25 meters and that I should take that into effect. Using my good logic I decided to add 2 laps and make it 32 laps just to be on the safe side.

So I start swimming not really thinking about much as I swim. It really seems to be taking a long time to get through the swim, but I did not think much of it and went ahead and finished up my swim and I was pretty proud the had meet my goal and swam 750 meters  (I did not look at the clock as was just concentrating on getting the distance)

When I was getting out one of my swim coaches was walking by and I started talking to him about being excited about finally swimming 750 meters straight.  He says that’s great and then says I should get my money back from the college I attended (where I was a math major) because 32 laps are 1450 meters!

 Doooooh

Guess I am closer to be ready for an Olympic length swim then I thought

As a side question how do you count your laps on a really long run with out messing up?

Laps or lengths? 32 laps is 1600 yards. 32 lengths is 800.

Lap = Down and back.
Length = Down.

32 laps in a 25 pool is 1600. 32 LENGTHS is an 800.

Don't sweat the meters/yards thing. If you're there to swim 1000, go down and back 20 times and call it a day.

Maybe an easier way to get through the distance and keep track of the time is to count in sets. Ex:
200 yard warm-up
4 x 50 yards (5 second rest)
200 yard kicking
5 x 100 yards (10 second rest)
200 yard cool down
Total about 1300 yards

Your math is better then mine, i use meters and yards essentially as the same thing.

I always work in sets, some long, some short. But something like that may be an easier way to count the laps, track your progress, work on a little speed and focus on the stroke and also probably more fun then chasing walls.

I use this on my longer swims, or sometimes just for time.  The one hand use is great.

I guess I'm weird in doing this, but I count by the 25s. Most people I know count by LAPS, which would be by the 50s, but I think that is way harder and much more confusing.

Each length, I repeat in my head "25... 25... 25... 25..." and then "50...50...50..50" and then "75...75...75...75..." etc. I say it in my head to the rhythym of my stroke. I make a big deal in my head on the 100s, like sing it to a song in my head, so I can keep a mental milestone of sorts.

If I'm doing a set where I have to do 8 or 10 or 12 100s in a row, I chant in my head something that rhymes with each number. For example... "One, One, One is DUMB" for the first 100... then "Two, Two, I love SHOES" for the second. Etc.

In short... chanting and rhyming.

I ussally do something like that but I really just wanted to see if I go 750 meters non stop.  I know its kind of wierd and was 99% sure I could do it but I just needed to do it

my idea was a big digital sign you hand in the water at one end and everytime you hit it it increases the count up or down by 1

slakey, what?  did you mistype?  not following this.

If a lap is a length, why the need for two different words?

I always thought:

length - one end of the pool to the other
lap - there and back

Hmm, I always use "length" for that.

What do you consider a length to be, then?

I count the yards/swam. 50/100/150/200 etc. almost never count lengths or laps. I keep track by using the pace clock (or my watch if no clock available). ex: The first 100 I swim in 1:20. at a somewhat steady pace I know that if I turn and see 4 minutes (plus or minus a few) I've gone 300.

This also creates a great incentive to 'beat the clock' so to speak. If the pace is 1:20 then I end up trying to turn before 4 minutes (in the example above) to improve my avg pace.

Seems like this needs a poll

Always thought a length was from one end to the other, and then when you get back to where you started (two lengths) you have completed 1 lap. So typically length = 25m and lap = 50m.

I think I will build a big donut-shaped pool, and then I will not have to worry about this.

it also needs a chocolate doughnut hanging from a string about a foot off the water that you can chase.
