Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hi everyone, I need some advice on avoiding blisters. Lately, the last 3 months or so, I have been getting them all the time on any run over about an hour or so. It's always in the same place - on the ball of my foot just below the big toe. I run with good socks - smartwool, I have tried a couple of different shoes, including a pair that is a half size larger than what I used to run with (at the suggestion of a running store). I think the slightly larger pair helped somewhat but still the blisters continue. I've tried body glide, different socks - I'm at a loss as to what else to try. Does anyone have any suggestions of what else I can do? It's becoming very frustrating because I tend to lose a day or two of running afterwords while the blisters heal. Thanks in advance! |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Sounds to me like it is still the shoes. Other things you can do would be to try drying powder or antiperspirant to minimize moisture and blister prevention patches on the potential hot spot. Vaseline or bodyglide works too. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Two things that have worked for me while hiking: 1. Duct tape. (I've never tried this on the ball of my foot, mostly on my achilles.) 2. Panty hose. Both allow the affected area to slide more freely in the shoe/boot, as far as I can tell. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Are your shoes tight enough? I had a similar issue after buying a new pair of shoes where the yankz were not tight enought. I had all sorts of blisters in the same place. Once I tighten them down, the issue went away. Just a thought. |

Just a thought. They feel snug but I'm sure I could tighten them up. Did you tighten everything - all the way down to the toe area or just pulled them tighter up where you tie them? |

Cover the current blister with gauze so the tape doesn't stick directly to the loose and/or tender skin, and use a piece of tape that wraps slightly around the top of foot towards the big toe, and goes across the ball of the foot to the small toe side, then cover liberally with Body Glide. |

I HAVE THIS SAME PROBLEM! My right foot, under the big toe and on the ball of the foot... the never ending painful spot. It hurts when I run. I have tried to scrub it down with foot care items... I have tried to soften it with lotion (and wrapping my foot overnight)... I use tons of body glide on it and I have good running socks. NOTHING helps. *Frustrated and in pain* |

Member ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I've been using a sock made by "Wright Socks". It is a double layer sock and for me has eliminated blisters. (http://www.wrightsock.com/) I have used both the cotton and the wool, and my preference is for the wool. Good Luck. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I have the same issue and have had it in all different shoes and all different sizes. Last time I tried duct tape I was out for a week the blister was so bad. I finally now have found that liquid bandage over the area, powder in my socks and shoes and wearing Injinji socks seems to be working. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I got that only on my left foot after I switched to forefoot strike. I seem to have solved it by putting an extra 2 inches of cut-off sock end over the toe area of the affected foot. My left foot is a little shorter than my right foot, and the extra room in my running shoes was allowing the rubbing to occur. So far, so good. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Have you been to the podiatrist? I had an issues with my toes rubbing together and nothing was working. It never occurred to me to ask the podiatrist until I had to see him on an unrelated issue. He gave me specifically shaped gauze to prevent the rubbing and even suggested I may need an orthodic. It usually comes down to the mechanics of how your foot is striking when you run. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I have blistering issues too, got them under the ball of my foot and one of my toes.. store thought it was due to shoe being too small so I went to a larger size.. still got them, specially when I tried to trail run and my foot was sliding all around the shoe Now I know that it was because I'm an overpronator, I've now got orthotics (and a smaller sized trail shoe), and the blister issue seems to be going away. I haven't had much really long runs with them though, but so far, so good. Seems that some of the clerks are better at noticing a gait problem then others since it was recommended that I get a neutral shoe (my road shoe) and now I've got a support shoe, with inserts.. maybe my gait got worse, but I doubt it. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I guess I am happy I have tough feet. I have run sprints and Oly's sockless and am currently training sockless and up to 7 miles with no problems. As others have suggested shoe fit may be the problem, and/ or how tight (or not) you are lacing them. In the interim covering with moleskin or duct tape may help you get on with running. Hope you get it all worked out! |

Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Is there a chance that you have changed your gait or foot strike? That could be the cause... But duct tape is a miracle worker. |

Member![]() | ![]() I had problems with blisters until I started using asics running socks. I have use much more expensive nike and other brand running socks but the asics just feel better and I have not had blisters since switching. When I did have blisters, a pharmacist friend of mine gave me some dr scholles moleskin pads (the thin ones) and they worked wonderful at allowing me to run even with the blister healing. Good Luck! |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Had the same problem. Getting the lacing just right is HARD - loose enough over the arch, tight enough around the ankle, don't cut off circulation, etc. Also, jam your foot hard back into the heel area before you lace up; will help with sliding. I also use the Wright socks, and if I don't use those I use two pair. I also use a different kind/brand of sock every day. Don't know why, but that seems to have helped a lot. I also concentrate on picking up my foot rather than pushing off; that, too, seems to have helped. Good luck - I don't know exactly why mine disappeared after YEARS of this problem, but I sure am happy! |

My left foot is a little shorter than my right foot, and the extra room in my running shoes was allowing the rubbing to occur. So far, so good. A follow-up. This is a bad idea I have figured out. Too much compression in the toe-box of your shoe leads to other problems. I'm going to look for a half-size smaller shoe for my left foot. Just wanted to update this in case anyone searched and read this suggestion. |

![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I have the same problem. I have recently started using a powder called blister shied. You sprinkle it in your socks, then shake your socks so the powder coats them. It has worked so much better than bodyglide, tape, etc. Here's a link to the company webpage http://www.blistershield.com/products.html I got my at a local running store... Good luck! |

Member ![]() | ![]() One sock can only wick so much moisture. Once the sock is saturated it will begin to rub. On runs over an hour I often wear a very thin, tight fitting, running sock under my normal running sock (fox river). I've been doing this for a few years now and rarely get a blister. |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I had a similar problem but only when I went sockless in my flats. the blister would form on both feet in the same place. what I ended up doing was wrapping medical tape around my foot covering the spot where the blisters form with a couple layers. I found that so long as I wrapped the tape all the way around my foot it won't come off during the swim and I haven't had a blister since. I guess that whatever is rubbing there can't cause enough heat through the tape to start a blister. |
