I know (or think) the most common pool length is 25 yards, but I am also curious as to whether people know their stroke count in a 50 meter pool (there are no yard-based pools where I live).

I've just recently started paying attention to this stuff and after reading that post on 10 points to swimming, and by using a lot of those suggested techniques I went from around 47 strokes per length in a 50m pool to 41!! I was SUPER excited, but then I was thinking back to hearing about some triathlete who has an average of around 25 in a 50 meter pool...?!

What is your stroke count? What is a good count to aspire towards as a triathlete?

(I'm assuming 41 in a 50m might translate to something like 18-19 in a 25 yd pool taking account the pushoff (2 strokes added) and the obvious math conversion.

I am 13-14 in a 25m pool so I put down 25-29 in a 50m but I haven't actually swam in a 50m pool in a looooong time.

In 25m, 17-18 if I'm playing 'golf', 20 if I'm well-focused on form; 21-22 if my form is deteriorating.  In 25yd, 0-1 less than those numbers.  I would love to be able to be consistently 16-17, but right now 17 is the lower limit of what I can do and still cover 25m.  That's all with pretty minimal push off the wall -- I almost never push hard off the wall.

Ummm, yeah.  I guess it's time to work with a swim coach. Mine is a staggering 28.  Yes, you read that correctly.

17-19 1st 500 then more consistent 19-21; still trying to consistently stay under 20.

p.s. that's for 25m

16 per 25M for me, doesn't matter if it's a 50m or 25m pool.

But it's not completely an indicator of efficiency...for instance, on the bike, Lance spins at 100+ going up a hill, while Jan was at 70 rpm. You can be fast with lots of strokes, or not that many strokes.

11-12 in a 25yd pool, 12-14 in a 25m pool

There really isn't an "ideal" number, it's individual to each person.  At 6'2", my numbers will be much lower than someone who is 5'2".

yup.

Did I mention, however, that I'm only 5'2", have only been swimming for a month and a half, and have only counted strokes once so far, though....

21-22 or sometimes more if I'm not paying attention, and I just stopped caring frankly.  (did I say that out loud?)

I started watching shorter women who were uber fast in the pool and counting their strokes and this one chick, who's done like 8 Ironmans had a lot of turnover, I thought, so I stopped obsessing.

As long as I don't drown before I get to the bike, I'm good. :->

If I'm playing swim golf and getting a lot of glide & wall push-off: 14 per 25 yards.

If I'm swimming normally, and not reaching the flags on push-off: 18-19 per 25 yards.

usually I"m right at 14-15,  by the end of a workout I'm usually 15-16

even though everyone is different I'd be willing to bet the faster swimmers will have the lower numbers.   I was always amazed at masters swim watching the ex college swimmers and how few strokes they took while moving so fast,   I"d look like a hyper windmill next to them

Ok, I'm definitely doing something wrong. Mine is 18-19/25 yds. I'm 6'4"!! I consider myself an above average swimmer, usually top 5 out of water in over 40 age group and swam competitively through high school. What the heck is going on here?

Yup. Two of the fastest people in our pool (as in, she used to swim for Italy), have 20+

x3. DPS drills are good for working on efficiency and body position, but for some a higher stroke count can be much faster without a huge energy cost. Sure I can swim 25 yards with an 11-12 stoke count but it's slow. Don't forgo good pacing just to have a low DPS.

I'm 11-12 depending on the timing of the turn. I am planning on swimming in a 50 meter pool at lunch today so I will count.

Backing up some previous posts, I wouldn't get too hung up on the actual count. That is a result of better swimming, not really a tool to become a better swimmer. Just like when you train for an Ironman you lose weight, but just trying to lose weight won't really make you a better Ironman athlete.

16 or 17 for me pretty consistantly @ 1:30/100 pace.

Counted one person at my pool took 37 and had a pace of about 3:00/100.  He's there pretty frequently, but doesn't spend anytime trying to improve his form and it shows.

I'm pretty consistent at 17-18/25 yds now. Was at 25/25yds when I started training last year!

And just to be clear... we are counting each hand entry as a stroke, right? I know that a while ago there was a thread on stroke count and someone posted that they were at 11 strokoes/25yds and it then came out that this person was counting left arm + right arm = 1 stroke. So they really had a stroke count of 22. I wonder if there are some people that might be counting that way... just a thought.

There is a pool near me that is 20 yds (yup, that's not a typo) and I once counted someone getting 35 strokes/length there.
