Subject: Nice finish to the NYC Triathlon
I was a volunteer coordinator for the NYC Tri yesterday, handling the run course volunteers and one of the aid stations. The volunteers had been told that as soon as the last runner passes their station, they were free to leave.

About 6 hours into the race, the last guy hits the run course. He looked to be in his mid-50’s, on the heavy side, and with one arm. It was hot and humid, he’d probably been on the course for 5 hours and he was clearly struggling to finish.

As he passed each run course volunteer and aid station, rather than just packing up and going home, the volunteers started following him, encouraging him, ringing their cowbells, eliciting cheers from the other spectators and random people in the park. He looked like he was ready to quit a couple of times, but the volunteers kept urging him to keep going, and telling him that he’d made it this far and that they were going to stick with him to the finish line.

With each volunteer and aid station he passed, the crowd of orange “Race Support” shirts around him got bigger and bigger and louder and louder. The course marshals on their bikes joined the procession as well.

By the time he reached the finish chute, he had a crowd of at least 20-25 people surrounding him, calling his name, cheering for him, exhorting the crowd to do likewise. The guy barely looked like he could manage another step, but somehow he managed to jog up the finishing chute with his hand in the air. It was pretty cool. I was glad to be a part of it. I haven’t always been around to see the DFL finisher, so I don’t know if this is common, but it was a nice way to finish the event.

The volunteers at the race were by far the most enthusiastic, informed, helpful, supportive and cheerful group I've ever seen at a race.  Whenever I had a question, it was easy to find someone, they knew the answer and they went out of their way to make sure that they were making the race a positive experience.  As a middle-of-the-packer, I can't praise them enough for making everyone feel like they were a pro.

AWESOME! It's things like this that make this an amazing sport!
JMK - thank you!
From reading the other posts...you helped several people on this site and I'm sure many more others during the race.
I saw you at the base of the big hill in Harlem...I was in my zone and was nervous about the incline approaching, otherwise would have slowed down to introduce myself.

I agree, the volunteers for this race were great.  They were helpful, friendly and knew what they were doing.  It was funny though, one of the volunteers on the run shouted that there were only.25 miles left, and then 100 yards later, another told me there were .3 miles left.  Other than THAT, I was overwhelmed by how great they were.

Jonah - I think you were the one who led my transition tour and it was very helpful.  The information you gave on the race thread was also great.  So thanks to you and everyone who helped make my first tri great.

On another note, though, am I the only one who would have been horrified to not only be DFL, but to have 25 people in bright orange shirts following me around Central Park making a huge deal about it?  Hopefully they were able to tell by his reaction whether he was appreciative  and encouraged (which is quite possible) or embarrassed, but I hope if I'm ever dead last, I can just finish my race like normal and the volunteers wait until I'm out of sight to begin taking down their stations!

Happy to help. Glad you had a good experience. One of my vols on the run was telling people "You're almost done!" when they were at mile 2.5. She meant "in the context of the entire race, you're almost done", but she got some comments from runners who said, "whaddya mean? It's only mile 2!" I told her to just say, "Great job! Keep going!" instead.

No youtube. Not even any pictures. I guess the race photographers went home early.

I was DFL in my first Oly and was followed by an ambulance and were sort of aloof. I'd much rather been followed and supported by the 25 people in orange shirts cheering me on.

I think that is cool that they spontaneously did that to help someone who was struggling and helped him finish.
