Subject: Aerodrink???
I have read a lot of posts on BT and ST stating that the Profile Designs Aero Drink is in fact aero and can actually make your bike faster.  I went to buy one yesterday at my LBS and while discussing them with the shop guys they stated that new tests actually show that the front bar mounted bottles slow you down. They said that rear was the way to go. I am sure I read in Friel's Bible that tests showed rear mounted systems make for more drag, but that people use them any way. I am a little confused about the conflicting information, does anyone on BT have any insight into the matter? I ended up not buying one (for now), not because of the aero/non-aero factor, but because I worry that having the straw so close to my face for 2.5-3hrs might drive me crazy.

worse than the straw in your nose while aero is the fact the sports drink splashed all over you and your bike computer.

its OK, but I find myself using mine less and less.

I only use mine for water.  I also have a rear-mounted hydration system for my sports drinks + the cage on the downtube.

The new ones come with a lid I think.

The new ones do come with a lid but it is has some rubber flaps that allow you to fill on the fly.  I have actually taken saran wrap and put on the top of mine and no splash.  I love mine and I don't seem to notice the straw at all while riding.

I hated my aero drink, I used it during one race and through it away. As far as the rear mounted systems, there is one system I have read about that is actually aero, Its called never reach, but I just stick with the bottle holders behind me, I am not going to win any time soon anyway.

I love my areo bottle

You have to go buy a SMALL traveling LUFA sponge in the same area as the other travel shampoo's ect..(walmart or target for like $1) this will keep it from splashing.

I drink twice as much with it then without it.

Slightly better idea:

BARP

Called the Bontrager Aero Race Pack. Insulated, better (but not splash-proof) top, easy to install, and has a built-in computer mount. Costs $45, haven't seen it for sale online yet, but my LBS was able to get it for me in three days.

I clipped the straw short enough so I wouldn't be giving myself a tracheotomy every time I ride.  The new bottles do have a cap and I like it much better than the old style where, regardless of the poof, crap flies out over every bump.

I have an el cheapo rear mount for two bottles so I can fill the aero while riding.

Being aero is more about comfort for me than speed.  I'm your resident DFL participant.

In my opinion it is the only way to go.  I love my Profile design and I never have splash issues.  Just use the sponge correctly and close the lid, its that simple.  I also clipped the straw to where I wanted it and it is not in the way at all.  I also see that I am able to drink more and do it safer than reaching all over tirnation.

I use a bar-mounted aerobottle simply because I don't have to move to drink. That's infinitely better than reaching back for a bottle every 10 minutes.

I tried the rear bottle cages, but I launched them one too many times and I lost patience with them. I couldn't get them tight enough to not launch. Now I'm running an aero bottle and 2 bottles on my frame. It may not be as aero, but I can ride as hard as I want and I don't have to be careful not to launch bottles. That's worth a ton of time in the race.
