Subject: Carbon Wheel Market -- Out of Control??
I'm not yet in the market, but I hope to be in the next 6 months or so, and so I've started looking around to see what these wheels typically bring.  What I see on ebay suggests to me a market that is severely inflated.  I see 5, even 10 year old Zipp wheels being sold for more than they cost brand new.  And the sleaze factor in the ebay ads is really high (people insert the word 'zipp' in their ad for no-name wheels; people misrepresent what they've got; they make ridiculous claims about speed gains that you'll get with the wheels, etc.), which is another sign (to me) that the market is overheated.

My questions are:

Do you feel the market for used aero wheels is overheated?

If so, has it been this way for a while (I've only just started paying attention), or a recent phenomenon?

Recent? Nah...Aero wheels hold their value because a lot of people aren't willing to dish out and pay full price for new wheels ($$$$$). I've never seen used wheels sell for higher than new wheels though.

Speaking of which, I need to put my disc in the classfieds. :-)

Welcome to free enterprise in a free market.

I'd imagine it's been like this since non-pros have been into the sport and probably close to this even when it was mostly pros who were buying the stuff.

Thanks for the reply,.  Just to clarify:  By 'more than new' I meant more than they cost new back in 2000 (or whenever they were new), not more than the new ones now.

what kind of a disc?  Surprised

yes wheels in general are very expensive.  even used.  never seen used sell for more, but most new high end brands are quite pricy...

I took home a set of carbon wheels this past weekend, but I don't think I'm going to buy them.

They are Zipp 440s (front has a Zipp hub, rear has an old Campy hub), but the rear wheel can only be ridden on the track. The set is $500 CAD and seems to be in decent shape. A friend just bought a set of 440s (for road) as well for $450 CAD, so they can be found used around here in the $500 range and there are a lot of used sets in the $800-$1000 range.

I'm not going to buy the set I came home with because I really want a rear disk that can be used on the road and the track. Off to check the classified I guess.

I have two sets of 50mm tubie rims.  Why two?  My wife got the first pair!  I bought a set of used HED 50mm wheels for $350ish on ebay.  They came with decent tires, valve extenders, and skewers.  The next set is a no name 50mm set that I bought new off ebay for $310, but not tires or valve extenders.  The interesting thing is that the rims are identical.  Ok, one of them sets HED and the other has no stickers, but outside of that they are the same.  My guess is that there is a factory somewhere that makes most of the non-zipp wheels.  I love both sets because they are fairly good aero wheels and weigh 2.5 lbs less than my trainer wheels.

Basically, be a smart shopper and the deals are out there.
