I have been reading IM race reports, then yesterday about a century ride I would like to do.  Coke-Cola is mentioned a lot.  It seems to be fairly common at aid stations.  I can't figure out why.  Is it the sugar, caffine or even the bubbles to settle your stomach?

Sugar, caffeine, fizz...all of it just plain sweet goodness once onto the long run.

Even at Vineman IM 70.3 with the 103 degree run, the hot cola just tasted good!

for me it's the caffeine.  if I drink a coke at mile 80 on a 100+ mile bike, i feel like a new person once it kicks it.

I love coke during the last part of a really long ride. Also, IM Moo has coke around mike 18 of the run.  Its flat, though, so no bubbles.

In Tour De France you'd see the cyclists getting a coke from the team car occasionally- caffeine sugar rush and fizz is all pick me ups

Sugar + caffeine = sweetness. Fizz only makes you gassy that is why its served flat in races.

I generally won't touch it unless its towards the end of the race because its made with High Fructose Corn syrup which can provide some major GI issues.

Pepsi or coke i forget started doing it with real sugar again, not all but some, I believe I saw the commercial at somepoint. Also coke does 'kosher" coke for passover in major cities you can tell by the yellow cap.

I quit drinking all soda a little over a year ago and haven't had one sip since, recently working on cutting all HFCS as well and have only had one cup of coffee all year.

We have a ton of corn in the states but not a lot of sugar cane.  I also think a lot of the sugar cane comes from Cuba which we don't do business with.

I'm starting to see a lot of sugar coke in the stores around here, but it's Mexican Coca-cola.  Everything on the bottle is written in Spanish.  We have a huge Mexican population around the area I live in so the stores started carrying them.

+10.
Fructose, esp in large quantities over a long race/ride, is responsible for many GI ills.  FWIW- Powerade seems to be lower in fructose than Gataorade.

simple sugar + high glycemic = a fast source of fuel (CHO) for your body.

It doesn't matter it it is made out of sugar or HFCS, when training/racing AND after you want to consume simple sugar/high glycemic foods/drinks.

Yes I did, but training still didn't compare to that 13 mile mark in an IM.  So that was a bit nervy to try in the race and it work well.

I drank my first Coke in YEARS after my Olympic last weekend when the heat and humidity were thick enough to slice with a knife.  I couldn't eat, but knew I needed something and that puppy helped.   I couldn't do it DURING, however, because my tummy wouldn't tolerate it.

Jones Cola is made with cane sugar. It also works marvels after the race when paired with distilled cane sugar products.

I've always figured it was faster to get down, and to avoid the gas. Dunno, though, never raced long enough to need it.

For those of us who don't drink many carbonated beverage, the carbonation can be hard to get down.  I also wouldn't want to try burping and feeling bloated the last half of the IM marathon.

I tried some coke near the end of CdA and wasn't a big fan.  I didn't train with it and don't ever drink it, so maybe it was just too sweet.

The hot soup on the other hand was delicious!!!!!
