Does anyone make a clip in pedal/shoe combo that you can actually walk in?  I'm using the Keo style right now and it's just ridiculous trying to go into a 7/11 for water.

Then bring your water with you.

Walking in your cleats should be minimal. In fact, my shoes rarely leave my tri bike. I've had them, what, three years and the cleats still look practically new.

I use Shimano PD-M770 SPD Pedals with Shimano recessed clip shoes.  Not the lightest or best shoe, but you can walk in them with out destroying the floor.

It is convenient when I do a donut run on my bike, I can walk in the store with my shoes on.

I use mountain bike shoes, gives me a traction to walk and not worry about my cleat touching the ground.

I have shoes that use a recessed SPD cleat. You can walk in them with no problem - but they're also super heavy!

They make rubber covers that can slip over your cleat. Doesn't really help with the actuall walking but extends the life of your cleat.

Most (if not all) of the shoes that have a recessed cleat will be of the SPD variety.

I've never seen a Look-style recessed shoe.

I have mountain bike shoes. I can walk in them-although I still rarely do but I love them. When trying to make my decision my LBS owner said told me to hold my hand up and proceeded to start placing various shoes in my hand. My mountain shoes were the same weight as the road shoes and I liked them...so I got them...

Shoes like the Louis Garneau Multi LG or a trekking shoe would work even better the a MTB shoe if you want a shoe just for training.

Mountain shoes... I can even lift weights in them...  For the little extra weight, get real...  The little extra will not make a difference for most of us...We overthink way too many things here...

X3 - I can run with my bike easily out of T1 and back into T2 with mine; Specialized MTBs w/SPDs.  I would like to go to road shoes and road pedals this fall after race season.

Mine are Trek mtn bike shoes.  No problem running with the bike in them.  They may not be as light as tri shoes but they're not big clunky mtn bike shoes either.  One velcro strap and I replaced the laces w/ elastic laces so they go on easy in transition.

Crank Bros makes road pedals you can walk in pretty easily.  Alternative is to get MTB pedals (Shimano SPD, Crank Bros Eggbeaters, others) and MTB shoes with small treads and stiff soles.  I've ridden a number of 50-100mi rides with my Sidi Bullet shoes & Eggbeater pedals with no probs.  My usu road set-up is Look Keos (or Shimano SPD-SL sometimes), but the Bullet shoes work great for recreational events with a lot of walking at SAG stops.

okay, this is OT, but i want to share dammit. i have shimano spd-sl or something like that. the big ones like OP refers to methinks.

so, one day i'm riding my bike up a pretty good hill to work. at the top of the hill i pass a guy standing by his pick-up truck on the side of the road and he "flags" me down for help loading the deer he just road killed into the back of his truck. so here i am totally fatigued, slipping and sliding around the back of his truck in my spd-sl cleats trying to wrestle my share of a (probably exagerated) huuuuuge deer into his truck thinking that i ought to carry some better shoes for such occasions. surprisingly, it hasn't happened since.

why is this relevent? its not.

x2. You're not going to want to walk miles in your shoes this way but you can get around a 7-11 or your workplace just fine.

Since the OP has been answered in spades, I'm following the tangent, because I'm a bad little poster...

Um, what about, "Sorry, dude, I'd love to help, but my shoes will skitter on the pavement. Good luck getting that monster in! Oh, and, uh, don't forget to call it in to [insert appropriate agency for your state]!"

I wear Shimano MTB shoes with SPD A520 pedals.  Bigger platform than the M520 MTB pedals...I'm very happy with them.  I have serious arch problems that make running (or even walking sometimes) barefoot an issue.  The modest extra weight of the shoes is worth it to me to have the support getting out of and into transition.

And a quality pair of MTB shoes are only going to weigh a tiny bit more than a quality pair of road or tri shoes. All entry level shoes are piggy heavy.

Taking wight off the rider is always cheaper, healthier and more effective if they have the weight to give up. But there is nothing wrong with clearing up the chance of spreading the misconception that mountain bike shoes are heavy because it's simply not true.

For recessed cleats, like everyone said, you need to use mtb shoes, with either an eggbeater or spd style clip.

But Look makes cleats that have a little bit of rubber on them to give you enough traction to walk (rather than skate) around the mini-mart or other short stops.

Quick question to the bear, though - if you leave the shoes on the bike, do you go barefoot (or sock-foot) into the store? Don't they have a "no shirt, no shoes, no service policy"?
