Specifically, I'm looking at IronMan 70.3 New Orleans and IronMan Florida next year.  Obviously FL hasn't even occurred yet this year, but I'm just curious when these events typically fill up so I make sure to get in them.  But since money is a bit tight, I'll probably try to wait a bit.  My husband wants to make sure I'm for real about these longer distances before paying the higher prices.

Not sure about New Orleans.  But IMFL traditionally has sold out within minutes of going online.  In recent years the only way to guarantee you will get a spot is to go in person and sign up onsite...

Dang.  That sucks.  That's definitely not what I was hoping to hear.  Are most of the IM races like that?

Most of the US ones are. Some never even make it online, they fill up with volunteers and people who are physically at the race.

You might get lucky this year with the down economy, though. Just be ready to hit the go button the minute it opens online.

Kentucky (in it's third season) is filling up faster, but it is still weeks I think.  Not sure if or how quickly St. George filled up since this is the first year coming up.  Coeur D'Alene was open for about 5-6 weeks before selling out this year, but it sold out in a week last year.

Some of the independent races don't sell out and are very well run events.

Some halves sell out quickly (a week or two), but most are open for months.

Shoot, we've got a sprint around here that sells out in hours when registration starts 6 months before the race.

There have been several threads on this lately...but I can sum them up.

No, not every race fills up that fast.  Traditionally CDA and I believe Kentucky take the longest.  Lake Placid and Canada tend to fill up either with on-site or within minutes online.  AZ is somewhere in the middle.

There is a segment of BT that believes the economy is causing all of them to take longer to fill up.

Finally, with the addition of the fall IMAZ in 2008, the playing field completely changed but we really haven't seen a true example of what it will be like.  IMFL used to be the only late season race....hence the fast sellout (that and the idea that the flatter course is easier).  Now that we have IMAZ at about the same timeframe, that is a huge factor.  However, people could sign up for IMAZ 09 at both IMAZ 08 races, so you can't judge IMAZ 09's sellout rate accordingly.

Bottom line, this fall should be interesting.  It will be the first time having both fall IM's with only the on-site from the current year in place.

I'm not sure how long you have been around BT, but every time there is an IM to sign up for, people have a HECK of a time trying to get in online.  Really.  Active.com sux big blue donkey ballz.  Even people sitting at their computer the second registration opens get blocked out because Active.com crashes.  So it comes down to how important it is to you.  If you really really want to do a particular race, the best bet is to be there in person.  If you don't really care and have more of the "when it works out it works out" mentality, then you probably can afford to see if you can get in online.

Or if you just want to do an IM, do a non-Mdot branded one....most of those do not fill up ever.

Personally, if it was me, and I lived in Birmingham...a short drive from PCB, and I had my heart set on racing IMFL next year, I'd be there in person signing up.

To me it's the crappiest part about the stupid mdot branded IM's in North America...who really knows what they will be doing in a year?  I'd much rather see them move the signups to six months out and do it all online (with a better website than Active.com).

If your looking for time before plunking down the $$$ and considering IM Florida which seems to sell out real quick, you can consider Beach 2 Battleship in Wilmington, North Carolina which is on the same weekend.  At last check it hasn't sold out this year as of yet, but is close.  They raised the entrants from last years 500 to 750 this year and the price to a whopping $325 or so from $250 in it's first year which is another $200 or so cheaper then any IM brand iron event.

It might not be an IM brand, but it had a lot of positive reviews from it's first year and I hope to add to it this year

Good luck!

From the sounds of it, non M-dot is the way to go.  I'm really not determined to do a particular race.  So I'll probably wind up doing the Beach 2 Battleship or maybe even Silverman (mentioned it to hubby and if we can save up the money he would be psyched to go to Las Vegas.  Thanks for the info guys and gals!

What about the half though - the 70.3 in New Orleans.  When is that expected to fill up?  I looked around on their website and saw nothing on how many people were signed up so far.

I think B2B is one that DOES sell out, so don't wait too long to sign up if that's what you want to do.

Most of the 70.3's are open for several months.

Most of the 70.3's are open for several months.

B2B sold out in about 2 weeks it's first year with it's cheap $250 fee (full iron fee) and only 500 spots.  This year the half sold out in early May, the full has 190 spots left as of this morning.  As mentioned they raised the fee this year to 325 and the amount of entrants to 750 for both races.

I signed up on the first day which was Dec 1st around 8am and I'm actually shocked it's still open, I thought it would sell out quicker then the 2 weeks it took last year.  If you do decide to do take McFuzz's advice and don't wait to long to sign up.  I assume the sign up will open around Dec 1 again this year.

Savageman sounds like a beast of a race.

I think IMFL stayed open online for a few days last year, but I could be wrong.  I know there were a few folks here in Atlanta that signed up when they heard it hadn't sold out.

You could always try for IMFL online and if it doesn't work out sign up for B2B.

FWIW, Silverman Full is probably one of the hardest races out there.  Seriously.  It's a tough one.  I personally didn't think the hills were too bad, but at the time I rode the course all I did was climb all day anyway.  But it has a LOT of climbing...especially the full.

If you really want to enjoy Las Vegas I recommend the half.

I think that you are wrong

It stayed opened until 5 PM of the same day.  I got in at around noon and checked back every now and then to see if it was still opened.  I think that it was around 5-ish is when I saw the registration closed message.  The year before that it stayed opened for 7 minutes ... that's according to the folks at NAS that replied to my inquiry.

I agree with one of the earlier poster.  With IMAZ as well as IM Cozumel being late fall IMs, it could be more than just the economy that will let IMFL stay online for a bunch of hours.  A bunch of people in my tri club are either doing IMAZ or IMCoz this year.  They would have done IMFL had the other two options not be available.  I suspect that they are not the only ones.
