Total Time = 33m 25s
Overall Rank = 2/
Age Group = 11-14
Age Group Rank = 1/
Pre-race routine:

Waffles for breakfast, volunteered for set-up and the younger age groups.
Event warmup:

none
Swim
  • 02m 24s
  • 200 yards
  • 01m 12s / 100 yards
Comments:

I didn't feel good in my swim. I forgot to do my inhaler and my chest was a little tight.
What would you do differently?:

Do my inhaler.
Transition 1
  • 01m 37s
Comments:

I was kind of upset when I got to T1. There was a guy by my rack and he was talking to me and it took my mind off being mad. I didn't use bike shoes & clips for this race, so I had to get my running shoes on.
What would you do differently?:

I had a good transition. I have to work on not being mad when I don't have a great swim.
Bike
  • 18m 37s
  • 6 miles
  • 19.34 mile/hr
Comments:

I had a great bike! I was a little nervous because it rained right as my race was getting ready to start. They even talked about dropping the bike leg. I got a good start and there were only a couple of people in front of me. I tried really hard to catch this one girl and I finally caught her with about a mile to go.
What would you do differently?:

I could have been in my aerobars a little, but I was a scared because it was still wet and there were kids weaving all over the place
Transition 2
  • 00m 32s
Run
  • 10m 15s
  • 1 miles
  • 10m 15s  min/mile
Comments:

I was so happy that my knees didn't hurt! I was going really easy because I was afraid they would start hurting. The girl I chased down on the bike caught me half way on the first lap. I hung with her for a bit, but then she dropped me. I know now I could have gone faster, but I'm happy I ran the whole way and my knees didn't hurt.
What would you do differently?:

Run a little harder!
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around and talked to my friends, had something to eat and drink.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Not doing my inhaler before my race and going too easy on the run.

Event comments:

They need more stuff for kids to do in between races necause the first race starts at 8:30 and the last race didn't finish until almost 12:00.

Way to go! First in your age group is really great!! That stinks about the rain- I've never raced when the roads have been wet, you must have had to be extra careful on the bike. Still, you had a great average speed on the bike. Glad you had a good time. Oh, and I was watching the Sunshine channel, and I saw your picture on there at the Publix Family Fitness weekend in St. Augustine!

I see you haven't been sitting around since St. Anthony's.  That swim was WICKED fast!!!  And the bike was even more so!!!  Easy to see why you placed #1.  Congrats!

I am so proud of the way you have dealt with your setbacks the past couple of months. I know how hard it has been for you and how frustrating it has been for all of us. It is easy to do your best when everything is going your way, it is much harder to do so in the face of adversity. I know how much you wanted to do well in this race because this was the first tri you ever did and it was your second anniversary race. And with all the kids on your swim team there, I know you felt pressured to live up to their expectations. You did it! You dug down deep and proved that you are a true champion. You raced smart, regaining your composure after your disappointment in your swim and putting it all on the line in the bike. It seems to me that Grasshopper is learning it is the journey, not the destination, that is important. Congratulations on a great race!
