I see a lot of people on here do marathons and half marathons during their tri season and through their tri training.  How do you do this?  I am interested in running a half marathon in a few months maybe but want to continue my tri training as well.

It's not rocket science.

Take whatever training plan you would use for your tri training, and whatever training plan you would use for your half marathon. Combine the two by eliminating the running from your tri plan and substituting the running from your HM plan.

Getting to the point where your typical training weeks have enough load to have you prepared for any of those distances in relatively short notice helps.  To do it "right" takes time.

I'm not one to give advice since I'm a newbie, but I'm doing the same thing.  I had three Tri's planned for this fall, then a 10K in late October and a half marathon in December.

I'm just going to continue Tri training while increasing run distances until my last Tri is over on October 4, then convert over to more running after that.

It should be a natural fit since the cross training will still benefit the run.

Curiously, when are your Tri's and your half marathon?

Maria

Not sure what in my answer gave you the impression I though you were less (or more) than a newbie. But, it really is tha easy. Combine your plans, don't skimp on  the HM training.

Not sure I can answer your question since I'm a newbie to tri's but I have 2 HM scheduled this fall(1 in Oct and 1 in Nov) with a full marathon in December.  I also have my first sprint try next month and maybe another in October.  I plan to train as usual for my marathon in the next few months, but the only difference this year is that I will be cycling and swimming to get ready for the tri's.

Bear is usually to the point...but offers good advice.

Anyway, i'm doing the same thing training for my first tri in September and i'm going to follow that up with a 10k and then half marathon in late November.  I'm going to do my tri training to help build my base for the run training after the tri.  Mine will only overlap by 2-3 weeks, but i plan on continuing my swim and bike to cross train for the half marathon and keep in shape for next tri season.

Ditto on the advice of using your running race training into your tri plan. My big piece of advice is to take a FULL rest day during the week.  Giving your body an entire 24 hrs to recover is one of the best things you can do for it.  As hard as it can be not to exercise for a day, it's well worth it in my book.

Good luck with all of your races!!

Sorry about the comment bear, it was a bad day for me i took a lot of things wrong that day. I have read your advice before on other peoples questions and it has really helped. I hope you accept my apology.
