There is an inagural triathlon being put on by a guy that I work with. He has competed in several IM's so he knows the ins and outs of racing, but here's the factors:

1) the race is on 9/13. Right now there are only about 15 people signed up to do the Olympic distance

2) this would be my first open water swim and first Olympic
distance (i've completed 3 sprints and am confident in the swim and run... bike is going to be tough!!)

3) being the first time this race has been done, there is a high probability of low volunteers/ race support

Soooo.. Putting yourself in my clipless pedals, would you do it???

My very first tri was similar to this and it was great fun. As long as you're aware some/all of the race will be self supported there should be no problem. If you go in expecting the same stuff as a much larger race you will likely be disappointed.

Sure, why the heck not? Just as long as you know what you're getting yourself into.

Seems like a no brainer. I can't think of what I wouldn't do for a friend.

I regret several things I've not done, but the things you do shape who you are.

Heck yes! But, I would do a couple open water swims between then and now. No reason to add that level of uncertainty when you have plenty of time to deal with it. Start this weekend.

Go for it! Little races only become big races if people participate in them!

Yep.

Just do it.

And then do it again next year when it doubles or triples in size...

I'm going to go a little against what everyone else is saying.  I'm saying NO WAY!  At least until you know how you can handle an OWS.

If you can get out there and don't have any problems withe the OWS then, YES!  Go for it.  Every event starts somewhere.

Should have clarified ... First OWS in a race situation. I'm actually going to go out and swim the course tomorrow with a couple of friends.

It's going to be fun to go from this tri to the US Open Tri in Dallas the next month!! At least I won't have to worry about getting kicked at the swim start!

As long as you are comfortable with the swim distance... but I would highly recommend getting in some OWS's before getting on the start line.

And of course you need to support your co-worker! He's probably putting in quite a few hours to get this race going (it takes much more than most people realize...). All races has started out small.
You might want to do it just for fun though and not making it your A-race for the year... the risk for few volunteers, etc. is probably (and unfortunately) quite high.

Then Yes, by all means.  Go for it.  Have fun.  The best part is in 10 years; when the race is huge, you can say you ran the in inaugural race!  (maybe win too!)

You are much closer to the podium in a little race.

I say do it and see if you can get some others, SO, friends family to be volunteers.
If you decide not to do it then you have to be a volunteer

I'd sign up and race or volunteer,  just depending on what he needs.  My wife organizes several events, and I never participate in any of the events.  I am too busy "volunteering", because she never has enough support staff.

x100 - you know, if it's small it won't be a washing machine but you gotta get out there a few times to make sure that OW doesn't freak you out - 1500m is a long way to go if you're not liking putting your face in the water or you can't calm yourself down

Go for it.

Ask you friend about the swimming staff support, how many kayaks, boats, etc... you don´t need very much for biking and running...

good luck

Yes... BUT ONLY if you can do some OPEN WATER SWIM PRACTICES before the race.

Good luck!
