 Subject: Bryancd, you better read this......Herbert posted this somewhere else, you've probably seen it... is it April 1??? "Ironman and Ironman 70.3 races is mandatory and marking an athlete’s age group on the calf is part of that process. Athletes competing in our events rely on age group markings on calves to identify their competition. Ironman has been receiving an increasing number of complaints that compression socks and calf guards hide age group identification. At Hawaii 70.3 in June, Ironman experimented with eliminating age group calf markings on all athletes. This attempt at resolving the issue was met by even more complaints by the athletes. Therefore, beginning with the 2009 Ford Ironman World Championship, garments that cover age group calf markings will not be permitted. Ironman’s goal is to design (and my job is to enforce) rules that provide the most level playing field possible. Sincerely, Jimmy Riccitello" |

| Regular 136 | Subject: RE: Bryancd, you better read this...... Wow, I have a problem with this. I have a medical condition that REQUIRES me to wear a compression stocking on my right leg/calf. I HATE that I have to wear this BUT I could NOT compete without this due to the amount of swelling over a long IM race. I am a BOP (IMOO in 2008 finished in 16:22:29) that most would not be concerned about me. My compression stockings are a tan. Although they are expensive (and my stockings have more compression than the new "trendy" ones) I would be willing to have my number written on this stocking. I assume this would be acceptable. Is this a correct assumption? |

I do like training and recovering in the compression socks but wouldn't race in them as they are such pain to get on. I do like the calf sleeves as well, but again, I could take them or leave them for a race. What I find remarkable about this ruling is it's a major blow to the clothing manufacturers and i am suprised WTC would make such an odd ruling that is so detrimental to something which has been marketed so aggressively by companies like ZOOT. I'm just not seeing how this rule is really needed. |

I've seen folks removing their age on their calves after body marking so others can't see it. What about super hairy men, that it is impossible to write on their skin? I've attempted to body mark a few guys like that in the past. I understand the idea but there are plenty of other ways folks can't read or see your age other than compression socks. |

I'm just not seeing how this rule is really needed. I would say if an age could be written somewhere else on the back of the leg... then the socks should stay. What if it were written near the bend in the knee, or on the hamstring (if the shorts were not too long). ??? Otherwise, I think it's BS when the athlete can cover up their age. |
