I know to never wear an ipod while biking, but is it illegal to wear one during the run?

Yep. Any USAT race, at least. No communication devices at all, including MP3 players.

Yes, it is Illegal.  You will get penalized in a tri race (yes you will).  The rules state you can't ware them in Marathons either, but most people do, and you don't get penalized.  I've read that they are going to change this rule for Marathons.   I dought it will change for Tri

Rule for road races has already been changed so that MP3 players are allowed.

They already had for USATF events ....... and not just marathons.  It is now the race directors call and their authority to enforce their own decision.

And there is nothing wrong with riding with one (outside of a race) unless you are taking other people's criticism and judgement to heart that are trying to force their belief and "safety" system on you and don't trust you to be able to make an adult decision about your own life ...........

If you're out on a bike ride with your headphones, then that's your own decision and if you get hit by a car because you didn't hear them, it's your fault. And while it's true that you sign a waiver saying you'll avoid suing the nice race people if you die, the rule is there to protect them as much as it is to protect you. Most triathlon courses, unlike a lot of road races, are not closed to traffic. Even though people will still sue, no matter how many rules are enforced, how many waivers are signed, it's just another level of precaution on the part of USAT. If you died or were injured because you knowingly broke a rule, it's harder to pin it on them, I'm guessing.

I always bring one... i have the iphone and use the GPS runkeeper app in place of garmin watches.  I normal leave the ear buds tucked into my tri-top and wait until I'm away from congested areas and put in 1 ear bud in... i'm just so used to having  background music in training its become a crutch.  Plus its a phone and its always nice to have it with you at the end of a crowded race or incase something goes wrong on the course.

I'm still waiting for someone to tell me exactly what I'm supposed to hear, and what subsequent action I am going to be able to take that will have me avoid getting hit.

If your music is loud enough, you may not hear the car behind you, or about to turn the corner, or someone blowing a horn because they're cutting you off, etc.

Whatever - ride with your headphones if you want. I wouldn't let my loved ones do it, but thankfully, I don't love any of you

So what are you going to hear the car behind you doing? And what action will you take?

Me, I ride the same position, a foot or two left of the white line regardless. Can't tell the difference by sthe sound whether a car is going to be six inches or six feet away from me, not soon enough to take any evasive action. And my volume is low enough to hear the car anyway. Can easily hear a horn.

On turns I rely on very thorough visual inspection.

I think some people automatically and close-mindedly dismiss this as dangerous without thinking it through.

I never ride with one,  I see the "you won't hear the car coming" thing every time this comes up. I guess my big question is, so if I'm deaf I shouldn't ride a bike? How do they do it? I don't wear one because I like the sounds of my bike ride.  Now I will say I was spectating at IM Louisville and saw a guy putting his ear pieces in right outside the bike exit. He was weaving all over the place. If I got wrecked out because a guy swerved into me while doing that. Um...yeah. Problem.

I wear one on the bike - in my non-traffic ear.  Not always - but on days where the motivation is not there it's definitely helpful.  I can see riding with both earphones in with it blaring and being generally not aware of traffic around you ... in which case natural selection takes over.  But as others have mentioned - I can't tell the difference when a car is coming up and I certainly couldn't do anything about it if they decided to run me over.

I saw one girl with an iPod at Steelhead... (right about the point in the run when I was thinking "Gee... that would be great.") but I don't know if she was penalized or not.

I always wear one in one ear for road races.  I set up my pace time by BPMs on Podrunner podcasts.  Keeps me on track without worrying about keeping an eye on my watch.

I've been running for 10 years, finished 11 marathons...all w/music!  I train the bike on a trail (rails to trails) so there's just a few stop signs and no car traffic to deal with.  I'll admit, I've had my ipod 1/2 the time, and not the other 1/2.  I would never wear them riding in traffic, seems like an accident waiting to happen.  But the run, oh the run!  I totally boinked in what I thought would be my strengh.  I kept trying to think of a song to sing to myself and all I heard was myself gasping for breath!  It was only a tiny 3 miles and I run a 6 miles a day at a 9 minute pace.  I thought I'd die...from the run!  I'd say my ipod is a huge crutch!  And I hate to admit I just tried to stuff it up in my hat to see if it could be seen.  Shame!

Other than the fact that doing so is actually illegal in many states...but, hey, it's not like cyclists have a reputation with the general public as feeling they're above the law or anything.

Cool, good to know.  I will not have to feel guilty for wearing mine now.   Is there any signs that they will be allowed in tris any time soon?

I doubt they will ever be allowed in tris.  Most people on the bike leg already seem to have trouble paying attention to their surroundings.  I really would not want to be near these same people with headphones on.  Yes, I just did a race this wekend with a congested course.  When did staying to the right become such a hard thing to do???

But in training, Bear makes a very good point that seems to be lost on most cyclists - relying on visual when turning, etc.  I have yet to hear when a car is going to turn in front of me.  But 100% of the time I have been able to see what was about to happen and avoid getting taken down, all while wearing headphones.

Ok, if I sneak it for Sunday's race and get "arrested!"  I'll come back and warn you all!  Other than that, I'm going to make my adult decision to wear (sneak) it for runs, and only on trails w/the bike!!!
