Being the engineer-geek that I am, I ran some statistics on last year's TTT results and provide the following data for your viewing pleasure (and to maybe help you determine if you are in the right category). Luckily I reviewed the results prior to signing up and am in amongst the "mortals". These stats are for the Men's group and are the percentiles (i.e. 0% is the slowest time, 100% is the fastest, 90% is the top ten percent of finishers, 75% is the top quartile, 50% is the top half, etc). Just looking at the results, if your goal were to place in the top quartile, and you were say 39, and you signed up as Cat 5, you would have needed a roughly 23.4 average. If you inadvertently signed up at Master 35+ you would not have even made the top half!
Cat 1-2: 0%=25.73, 50%=26.61, 75%=26.97, 90%=27.10, 100%=27.19
Cat 3: 0%=22.71, 50%=25.57, 75%=26.05, 90%=26.41, 100%=27.34
Cat 4: 0%=20.17, 50%=23.79, 75%=24.92, 90%=25.19, 100%=25.56
Cat 5: 0%=16.45, 50%=22.20, 75%=23.39, 90%=24.48, 100%=26.31
M35+: 0%=17.69, 50%=23.41, 75%=24.97, 90%=25.81, 100%=27.47
M45+: 0%=14.85, 50%=22.88, 75%=24.06, 90%=25.82, 100%=26.70
