Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I've been researching "the elimination of cable/dish" but still watch shows in a manner similar to now. What it would entail so far: 1. antenna to watch local channels - several of which are HD 2. Entertainment PC next to the TV to act as a DVR. That's the basic requirements. We have a Wii and a Blu-Ray player already. I found software today to stream internet videos (Hulu, CBS, NBC, ESPN, etc) thru the Wii. Tested it out this evening and it works pretty well. No skips, hang ups, etc. Somewhat pixellated. But it works. I was geeking out over it. |

Oh, and does it work with Netflix online movies? www.Playon.tv They've got a 14 day free trial. And yes, it works with Netflix online. You download and install the software onto your networked pc. On the Wii, go to the internet (had to download the internet app for the Wii) to www.playon.tv. It will show you the pc you have the software running on, click it and BAMM! We watched Chuck season 1 episode 1 last night. The kiddos thought it was cool too. |

I have the "home PC" sitting on a desk in another room. NOT an entertainment PC next to the TV. I'm drawing the logics in my head. Home PC has the router, then you network the Entertainment PC (wireless ?), then Wii through the Entertainment PC? Just found this - ^^^ Is that what you have similarly setup? Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I gave PlayOn a try a couple months back and was very impressed. Unfortunately, everything in the house with an IP address outside of the office (where the router is) uses wireless which I found to be too slow for PlayOn. |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Powerline's pretty good. I use it for my DVR and my daughter's PC. Wireless was real flaky for the bandwidth; powerline works much better. I've found Netgear adapters for ~$30 on eBay which is a bit more than a wireless card, but not ridiculously more. Now if I could somehow use my DirecTV DVR on the network, I'd be MUCH happier. Can see the device on my network, but can't access it or see listings of what's stored on it. ![]() |

Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() If you've been following much of the current debate on network television, there is a possibility that it will not be free soon, especially with Fox now asking for a fee to broadcast their services. If the other networks start this (which they probably will) then it has been speculated that they will no longer send programming to places like Hulu for free. |

Cat 6 would be nice for faster throughput, but is a LOT more expensive and better suited for corporates instead of home networks, plus, your bottleneck is throttled by your ISP anyways. |

I like Hulu but there's all kinds of speculation that they will start charging this year. With Netflix streaming, a Blu-Ray player and a local antenna we can get a large number of channels/programs. How about Discovery Channel & the History Channel? Those I'm not sure how to get without cable/satellite. |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Waiting patiently for the Netflix/Wii this spring, already ordered their program disc for it. It will be interesting to see what happens with the Hulu/network online airings for free this year. I had thought that Hulu could already pay/make some money for some of this stuff (hence selling add space for the middle of the shows.) so I am not sure if they really will charge for it. I hope they don't anyway as my wife and I would pretty much stop watching anything but netflix then. Oh well more time to SBR or Wii |

No need to run cable OR no need to buy one of those expensive wireless adapters for your system. Here is what you do..... if you have a laptop that has wireless already as well as a ethernet connection.... go to these two connections, choose both of them (CTRL), right click, then Bridge connections. Plug a regular ethernet cabel from your laptop's ethernet to your xbox, wii, ps3 etc and instant connection. I did this to my xbox and it works like a charm. Saved $100 bucks by not buying the wireless adapter. |
