Women's Hockey Silver Medalists

Master  1890     Cypress, CA |  Subject: Women's Hockey Silver MedalistsCaught the very end of the gold medal game last night and the medal ceremony. As the U.S. women were having their silver medals presented to them, it seemed like almost all of them looked significantly peeved, angry, sad, disappointed. I'm not quite sure what I think about that. On the one hand, they're silver friggin' medalists in the Olympics and that's not too shabby, so they might have at least been a little more grateful and gracious. On the other hand, they had just lost the game, which had to be a huge disappointment for them and they didn't really have a chance to process those emotions before the medal ceremony. What does COJ think? |

That is one of the difficulties of having the medal ceremonies immediately following the game. There is not time for the brain to process the loss and reach the point of being grateful for the opportunity to have competed at that level. They played well throughout the Olympics and should be proud of the results that they achieved. It's okay to be disappointed that you lost but should enjoy the experience. (I would imagine that they will when they look back. Probably just a bitter pill at the moment.) |

So much so in fact, that the chairman of the IOC is talking about dropping women's hockey from the Olympics unless other countries step it up a bit. The Canadians and Americans beat everyone else by a combined 86-4 at this tournament. The Canadians and Americans were absolutely expected to get to the gold medal final, without a shadow of a doubt. So I can understand why the team members do not view a silver medal as much of an accomplishment. It'd be like the Colts and Saints in a league with all the ACC football teams, and whooping it up because they finished second in the league. |

They just lost the game. these are top level players who are driven to win so it would be hard to be happy right away. I love the trash talk that CTV played before the game! They really are rivals. I actually like most of pictures. It's really nice to see them enjoying themselves and being a little silly. |

When I first saw it, it looked like the Silver Bullet. But now, I looked again and there is a huge Maple Leaf on them. I think they are Molson Canadian. Better choice. Not the best, but much, MUCH better. |

I don't like either, but I suppose Canadian is the lesser of two evils. GM Place - $8 for a 14oz beer... At least the girls didn't have to drink the draught that Joe Public have to. |

But when you are photographed doing something against the law in the host city, intentional or not, there is a good chance that you are going to be sent home. Personally no issue with celebrating like they did, but there is some of that act like you've been there as well. Some of these girls have won silver/gold medals for the last 4 Olympics.... Optics are a big thing. |
