Master 1557 Maine | Subject: Target: Boston Marathon I'm starting this thread in the hopes of finding other BTers who have a goal of qualifying for Boston at a 2010 marathon. I would love to have a group of people who have this as a common goal for this year, so we can follow each other's progress and encourage/heckle/nag each other along the way . So if you're interested, post your info here: what qualifying race are you planning to do, when is it, what is your qualifying time, how close do you feel to making this goal, and any other info you want to share. I'll start: My goal is to run a qualifying time at the Maine Marathon (in Portland) on 10/3/10. In 2008 I ran a half marathon in 1:25:30, and ran the marathon portion of IMLP in 3:43. I did not do much running or other training in 2009. I'm hoping that with some consistent training I can get back to the running shape I was in in 2008, get my mileage back up, and be able to hit the 3:15 I need to get to Boston. Anyone else? |

Expert 671 | Subject: RE: Target: Boston Marathon A BQ time is on my list for this year. IM St. George is first though. I haven't picked a fall race yet. I ran 3:19 at Chicago in 2006. I need a 3:15. I'll join you in the quest. |

Sounds like if you've got a 3:19 in you, then a BQ time is in your reach. I know there must be others out there - where are all our fellow Boston wannabees? |

Veteran 122 Lubbock, TX | Subject: RE: Target: Boston Marathon Maine Rob...I'm in! I ran Dallas White Rock last December. I had taken almost 3 months off because of a torn quad muscle last year before starting to train in September. I felt so unprepared(didn't feel comfortable doing speed or hill workouts so I had zero worked into training) but ended up setting a new personal best by 11 minutes of 3.25.54. I ended up re-aggrevating the injury and had to take another month off, but feeling really good now. I'll be doing Dallas again December of this year for my try at Boston. |

Master 1557 Maine | Subject: RE: Target: Boston Marathon So this year's race was yesterday, which means we now have less than a year til we're toeing the line in Hopkinton . Anyone else feel more inspired after seeing yesterday's race go down? How's everybody doing with their training? I'm feeling pretty good about my running at this point, as my weekly mileage is creeping up, and I'm back to double digit long runs at a good pace. |

Veteran 122 Lubbock, TX | Subject: RE: Target: Boston Marathon I'm excited about qualifying for Boston. To be honest, I want a sub 3hr marathon more than I want to qualify for Boston. But I guess the next step would be to just qualify. 3:10 sounds more reasonable right now than 2:59. My long run right now is only about 12-13 miles but once I get into marathon training later this summer, that will increase. Brian |

Master 1557 Maine | Subject: RE: Target: Boston Marathon To be honest, I would like to see a sub-3 marathon as well. My ideal would be to qualify this fall, run well and consistently through the winter, and run sub-3 at Boston. We'll see how that plan works out . |

Expert 743 Olney, MD | Subject: RE: Target: Boston Marathon Glad to find this thread... My wife qualified and ran Boston this year. She wasn't very pleased with her run this year and wants to do it again next year (she still easily qualified). We both want me to qualify as well. We both ran the Marine Corps Marathon last year as our first marathon. I ran a 3:53. So I only need to drop 38 minutes at this years Marine Corps. Just ran a 10 mile race a couple weeks ago at Boston qualifying pace so that was my first test. Felt great the whole way and think I could have done a half at that pace. Still a long way to go, but I know I have it in me. Just have to put in the time. A triathlon or two is on the schedule, but other than that, probably a few 5k/10k/half marathons along the way so running will be the focus. Looking forward to following everyone's progress and feeding off of you all. |

Master 1557 Maine | Subject: RE: Target: Boston Marathon How's everyone doing out there? July was tough in the northeast, with a lot of high heat and humidity, which did not help in the motivation department. I was still able to have my biggest volume month ever for running, so that was good. I ran a 1:28 half marathon at the end of June (with a sinus infection), so I'm feeling optimistic about qualifying in October. Edited by Maine Rob 2010-07-31 7:17 PM |

Champion 9430 No excuses! | Subject: RE: Target: Boston Marathon I'll join in on this. I have run Boston a few times but since getting into IM's marathon training has gone bye bye. I am doing IMWI and then CDA in June. Trying to find a marathon in Feb or Mar to get a sub 3:10 back in me. I don't think I would go to Boston next year but it would be nice to be back running faster again. |

Member 146 | Subject: RE: Target: Boston Marathon I'm new to triathlons, and new to this message board, so I'm a little late joining the party. My goal is to BQ this year in the Richmond marathon (a goal I never thought would be possible, but I'm beginning to think that maybe I can get close). I only have to do 3:45. (Only. I mean, compared to you guys.) Ran Richmond in 3:58 in '07, had a baby, and ran 4:02 in '09. The next weekend I ran a 1:48 half marathon - 15 s/mi faster than my BQ pace. In April of this year I started training for tris and did my first HIM last weekend. I'm stronger and faster than I've ever been, hoping to carry that over to the marathon (although I haven't been running nearly as much as I did in previous years). Ramping up the mileage next week since it looks like I've recovered okay - I'll see what I can do. Even if I do qualify, 2011 will probably already be full though. Maine Rob - you're probably tapering by now - hope your training went well! |

New user 3 | Subject: RE: Target: Boston Marathon Good luck to you all. I have hopes of qualifying on October 17th. I need to beat my PR by 16 minutes, but after doing LPIM I think I've got my base going. My speed and stamina are coming along. Speedwork is a new concept for my legs. Fast long runs for stamina are trying. I did the same marathon last year at BQ pace and cracked after about 16 miles. Then again, I hadn't trained for it specifically like I have this year. I gotta believe! For the record, I found that it took a little longer than I had planned to recover from Lake Placid before I could run long or hard. I would give it 3 weeks before serious running and run in earnest on the fourth week. Then again, I've read it depends on the individual and how hard they race. I was able to lean on my base from IM. I've concentrated on speed and stamina post IM. |

Master 1557 Maine | Subject: RE: Target: Boston Marathon I kind of disappeared from BT for the last few months, so sorry I haven't been around here much. Anyway, I ran 3:14 at the Maine Marathon today, good enough for Boston (with two minutes to spare). Best of luck to everyone as you chase that goal! |

Elite 5316 Alturas, California | Subject: RE: Target: Boston Marathon Hi gang. I BQd this year and intend to go to Boston in April. It was my 2nd marathon and I improved by 30 minutes to qualify by 30 seconds.... in 40 F temps in the rain. I mostly wanted to add some encouragement and well competing at Boston will have simlar pressures to qualifying... you are in with alllll fast people. BQ is duable, but yes it takes years of base building and then getting the speed up and then being able to hold it without crashing. I could see the finish line and still at that point was not sure I would qualify. It wasn't until I hit the finish line that it was a done deal. That mary was harder in many ways than the IM's I have done. I was flat at the top of my speed, breathing and Hr zone for the last 6 miles. It was all I could have done that day, and it was enough. Now to build for Boston, post collarbone break starting this week. Hang in there guys and remember you get another 10 minutes every age group you go up 8). |
