I had nothing better to do today so i went with some friends to a Cannibal Corpse concert. The atmosphere there was insane, almost as crazy as the people. My friends are all serious metal heads and ive never understood it. Not that i consider it bad music, i just cant figure it out. Is it a joke about rebelling against society? or an outlet for rage/anger? enlighten me please

Well heavy metal is fun I think. I only listen to some heavy stuff but I dont live it. I would never go to a concert because I am not super heavy like that. It also depends on the band. I dont listen to the hate crap... just the good crap. If you know what I mean

Have the fun of a metal concert for me is watching the little awkard teens trying so hard fit into a group of people that take pride in not fitting in. So yeah, metal music is a bit pointless, but the crowds that it draws provide some serious entertainment value. Plus, every now and then, a metal band comes along with some serious groove, but what exactly that is depends on the type of metal under consideration. So, opinions very on that.

There are all kinds of metal bands the same way there are all kinds of rock bands, country singers, classical composers, etc. Cannibal Corpse falls into the "death metal" subgenre. Death metal conventions include gratuitous loudness, screaming or roaring vocals, and a fast beat (where not all metal music need be loud simply for loudness's sake, have screaming, or have a fast beat). Certainly, death metal isn't to everyone's taste, the same way smooth jazz isn't to everyone's taste. You might've liked the concert better, or found more to it that was appealing to you, if it'd been a different genre of metal.

The music can be about any kind of thing, but since the main feature that distinguishes metal from other rock is distorted guitars, and distorted guitars sound discordant to most people, metal lends itself to being a vehicle for rage and anger.  Some of it IS a joke about rebelling against society, some of it actually is about rebelling against society, some of it is chaos for the sake of chaos, some of it would be ordinary pop if you turned down the distortion on the guitars and replaced the heavy drums with an 808.

I still consider myself a metalhead, but I don't get into a lot of the metal bands that have been around, even at the start of it all back in the late '70s, early '80s.

I just like the rawness, driving beat of "classic" metal - Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, and Iron Maiden.  Everything else to me is a spinoff (Ratt, Accept, etc.)

I don't understand "Rap" and many other genres (Goth, "Indie", etc), but, if it has a good beat, and is in a particular key that I like, and the lyrics are reasonably understandable and acceptable (to me), I don't care.

<------- Huge metal fan for years and years.

I like it for the sense of "power" and rawness that comes from distorted bass, screaming guitars and double bass drumsets.

But I also am not into the "speed for speeds sake" type of metal.  Bands like Maiden, Metallica, Opeth, Mercyful Fate, Dream Theater, Korn, Tool, etc. are ones that have really fantastic musical talent.

Hey Sharyn, I love Slipknot. Good, solid angry music. 99% of the time I only listen to it while running or weightlifting, I've really got to be in a "hardcore" mood. The other 1% of the time is when I am driving and trying to get there fast.

I agree about the voice, except the sexy part for obvious reasons. Cory (the lead singer) has what I call vocal credibility that matches the rest of the music. Some bands have heavy drums/guitar but a whiny vocalist, which puts me off completely.

Their newest album had like 3 good songs, so it is mostly only their older stuff, like Disasterpiece, that I listen to.

My 13 yr old is into DragonForce (or something like that) He plays guitar and currently likes the speed for speed sake. He doesn't understand why I am not a fan bc. must of my ipod is full of metal. When I try to explain the importance of vocals, beat, etc... his eyes glaze over. To each his own.

I like it for many of the reasons described above. The combination of distorted, fast guitar, awesome drums and the overall  loud/angry quality to it is why I listen to metal. Personally I can't get into the "death metal" because I'd like to understand some of what they are actually saying , but I do love some bands like Mushroomhead, Killswitch Engage and All That Remains.

From a guitar standpoint, my daughter likes them too...funny.
I don't care for them...she also likes Bullet for my Valentine...does your son like them? If he hasn't heard of them, get him to listen, although there is some swearing (not sure how you feel about that)...the guitar solos are brilliant.

Thanks for the heads-up

If we're recommending some good music, I must insist on more people listening to Mushroomhead. Absolutely one of the most under rated bands IMO.

I went to music school in the late 80's in Hollywood and was kind of part of that whole scene out there.

So I pretty much grew up on metal music and what first attracted me to it was the songs about parting, girls, and hanging out with your buds. Also as a teen especially in the 80's if you liked hard rock music, you were kind of different so a lot of the songs were about standing up even though you were different and joining together to stop being a cast off... remember "were not gonna take it" by twisted sister. Also there are a lot of bands that are political in nature that have subjects that bring attention to social issues.

Also heavy metal music tends to push the boundries of music and thinking. IF you look back over the past 30 years  and you think of all of the music you heard and said to yourself "WTF is that kind of crazy music", those are the bands that really changed the way we listened to music and how music was created. Think... Metallica, Korn, Rob Zombie, Marilyn Manson, Slipnot, Kiss, Ozzy, Alice Cooper, Nirvana, and even bands today like Mastadon, and Dragonforce... These bands changed rock history, you dont get that in pop music, country, maybe in rap... But can you name one pop artist that everyone said WTF when you first heard the song and then they changed history???

When I really started being in bands and playing the music, I learned how complexed the arrangments are and how developed the musicians had to be to play the music. Heavy metal uses a lot of strange times signatures and chordal voiceings similar to what you would find in jazz music; plus there are maybe a bizillion different scales for soloing that you had to learn. I think at one point I knew 45 different scales and how to find them anywhere on the guitar neck and could play them in any key, in 3rd, 5ths, and minor 7ths if needed.

A lot of heavy metal music have very complexed themes and subject matters, as well as whole albums that are conceptial in nature and tell a story. A LOT different than 3 chord songs and pop songs that sings about being a Genie and having someone rub you the right way.

I still love my 70's and 80's heavy meatal music but I do like some of the new stuff. Besides when you are doing a hrad run, would you rather be doing it to Metallica, Nickleback or someone like that or gutting out the last 3 miles of a hard run and on your ipod pushing you home is Lady GaGa (who I like by the way).

Plus you have bands that are just friggin fund to watch and really push the envelope. Bands like GWAR that shoot fake blood in the audince, WASP that used to throw meat, Alice Cooper cuts his own head off with a gullitine, and I am sure there are many other examples. So sometimes it is just fun...

Well they tune their guitars down to a open C which is heavy and they sing about liking a girls pants around her feet...

Sounds like a modern day Van Halen to me... so yea they are metal in my book.

I have found that I am much more into the instrumental than the vocals. I like the heavy guitar, bass and drums, but then when the vocals start I want to turn it. I wish I could get/find some good instrumental versions out there or find a way to strip out the vocals.

Any good suggestions for that?

But their "ode" to Dimebag song with his riffs in it was pretty heavy.  They are somewhat of sellouts but they do write catchy tunes with some edge to them.  Metal?  No.  Heavier rock?  Sure.

I do not (or would not) own any of their albums however!
