Thinking about doing this event, pretty good? Live in Pensacola, I assume wind is a factor on this bike course?

I can say it is a well done event, organizers really have it dialed in. It is basically the same venue (Boardwalk Resort) and course as Ironman Florida. In years past, the bike route has been on hwy 388, they are reworking that due to new airport traffic. Should be an easy fix, I'm speculating just longer on hwy79 to hwy20. All still very good roads. Yes it is flat and wind can be an issue. Last couple of years, more comments about the heat, but that time of year you never know... Anyway, it seems to be very highly rated for either a first or repeat HIM.

Is anybody on this thread planning to be at the 2011 GCT? I have started the 1/2 Iron Training program available on this site and am in week 3 of the Prep phase. I would love to hook up with some fellow participants!

We're pondering it as an early prep for IMFL - need to try out ocean swimming - yikes.

Looks like lodging is expensive...any suggestions? Appreciate the info on the course and that it's a quality event!

Check out the first few pages of the 2011 Ironman Florida forum, they have a similar discussion on hotel/condo, most seem to have good luck with VRBO. there are some location names listed and comments. hope this helps!

We are taking a camper down and staying in the park. Price is reasonable and it is close to the venue.

I did this race last year for my second 1/2 distance race and had a great time.  The volunteers are the best of any race I have been too.  The swim was challenging and the run got hot but it was an awesome event.  I am out this year but I plan to return next year.

thanks for the well wishes! I should have said I'll see you this year from the sidelines, cheering you all on and back next year in the mix! I also forgot to mention, most importantly, my bike is ok...

Wetsuits were allowed in 09.  I used one, but I wished I would have used my speedsuit.

They've been legal for at least 2 years that I've done it.

I was told by a guy that's done the race for about 10 years that he's never not worn his.

Generally rough sea state + inexperienced swimmers = strong motivation by RD to find a cold spot.

Good luck!

I've raced there 6 times - always wetsuit legal. Given the fact that this is one of few open water ocean or gulf swims you might find, the RD has always had some extra motivation to find a temp measurement below 78'.

But you never know for sure until race morning...
