Subject:Which Wholesale Club - Costco, Sam's, or BJ's?
COJ, I need your help!! We used to have a Costco membership, but canceled it because we didn't use food quickly enough. However, now I have a chest freezer, so I'm looking at getting a wholesale club membership again. Within 5 miles of my house, there is a Costco, Sam's Club, and BJ's Wholesale Club. We will mainly use it for meat, produce, frozen food, and over the counter medications. The ability to use a credit card (other than AmEx) is a plus, but not an absolute necessity. Which one would you recommend?

I don't know about the other two stores, but Costco has lots of other non-grocery perks as well. We recently went on a long weekend trip to San Diego, and got 10% off of our stay at Best Western because we were Costco members (if you book the room through their website, there are lots of discount deals to be had). They also have pretty decent deals on tires and auto parts.

Never been a member of Costco but I heard great things, like Excellent choices and quality but they give an extended warranty on most items they sell.
For you list, sounds like Sam's would be your best fit. We have a Bj's and Sam's here and I've been a member of both. Sam's has a better Food and Vegetable selection. My only warning about Sam's depending on the item, you be better off buying it at there sister store. Bj's takes coupons and give you coupons on there items. I'm pretty sure Sam's doesn't take coupons.
We're currently members of Bj's due to the closeness to our house. If the rumors are true about Costco, I would probably be a member if we had one in town.

We've belonged to Sam's Club and BJ's. I've been in several Costcos on my MIL's account. I prefer costco to Sam's or BJ's.
Selection was better and seemed to be better quality stuff at Cosco. Between Sam's and BJ's I prefer Sam's. We are limited to Sam's because it is the one Wholesale place around us.
We went a year at BJ's without paying for a membership because we kept getting things in the mail for one month free trial memberships.
You could also go and walk around the stores and see which one has more things you will purchase. You might have to go to customer service to be allowed in.

I say Costco has if over the others---the only "downside" for what you mentioned is the AmEx thing---that said they take cash, checks and you can use DEBIT cards.
The food is top quality. As for tri stuff---well they have nice Speedo suits from time to time and googles....and the big boxes of Clif bars....and we bought our gym quality treadmill from there for a great price!! Also as was mentioned above---I use them to rent cars whenever we travel.
Some of the "gift" type stuff from costco.com is great too (dad's b-day is in Nov and we always send him a nice fruit basket that he LOVES...well I thought it was more expensive this year but still a good price since he says the quality is fantastic so I ordered it----few days later get an email saying that it's going "on sale" in a week so they will be crediting my CC the $10 difference!! I thought that was very nice since I didn't have to do anything and it wasn't on sale when I bought it...).

I would say Costco. We have Sam's and Costco here, no BJ's, and have memberships to both. If you're using to primarily by meats, I would definitely go Costco as they seem to have a much better selection and higher quality of meats than Sam's.
(Sam's has a better selection of dried goods but that was not what you said you were looking for.)

We don't have a BJ's here but I prefer Costco over Sam's. Sam's seems to be better suited to small business needs where Costco seems geared toward families.

I thought Sams and Costco were so similar you almost couldn't tell which one you were in, once inside. I am a longtime Sam's fan. We are close to both, so we compared one time. I think Sam's was a tad cheaper so we stuck with it eventually. I find everything I need (and more) when I go. I don't think you would be sorry there.
At Sam's, I can use my bank card. It does have the visa logo, but is my "debit card" that I use at ATMs.

If you have a preference between supporting the Walton family or a living wage for the employees you encounter, you may want to factor that in as well.

You can use your debit card at Costco as well just not a Visa credit card

For us it is all about Costco. We get a lot of our food there, especially anything that can be frozen or is shelf stable. We also save a TON of money buying doggy stuff there, food, treats, dog beds, and medicine (flea meds).
I also like there selection of "other stuff" such as books, movies, video games, clothes etc. Has always done right by me.

Thanks for all your input everyone! We narrowed it down to Costco or BJ's and then got a free 60 day trial membership to BJ's. We went there tonight and were impressed. It's a bit smaller than Costco, but also a lot less crowded and open until 9pm during the week. They accept manufacturer's coupons, which is nice. They also have gas like Costco. We're trying it for the 60 days and then we'll make a decision between it and Costco.

We only have BJ's in our area and we used to keep a membership. It was good for diapers, wipes and that. But we came to the realization that we were buying crap we didn't need going there out of obligation to the membership. "We need gas. Let's go to BJ's" ended up with 2 books, clothes, a huge bottle of ibuprophen and a 5lb tub of twizzlers costing us $65 to save $3 on gas. We quit and don't miss it much.

Yeah, until the banks put that spending limit on them.
