Me?  I'm currently re-working my way through The Lord of the Rings, again.  Frodo just made it across the Ford of Bruinin.  Phew!  I was certain this time he might not make it!

What book(s) are you reading right now?  Do you like it?

I just finished David Sedaris' 'Dress Your Children in Corduroy and Denim'. Very funny, though I liked 'Me Talk Pretty One Day' better. Also just read a book called 'Crow Lake' by Mary Lawson. I'd never heard of it, and picked it up in the used book store on a whim, but I enjoyed it. Looking for more--I HATE it when I don't have another book on deck.

Here's what I'm reading:

  • For fun: Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix by J.K. Rowling
  • For learning: Just War Against Terror: The Burden of American Power in a Violent World by Jean Bethke Elshtain
  • For growth: Traveling Light by Max Lucado

Yeah, I'm one of the ADD people who has to/ can read three books at once and still keep them all straight...for a while.  Don't ask me what I read last month, though.  I may not remember.

Kim Stanley Robinson's "Green Mars" - 2nd book in the Red/Green/Blue Mars triology - a very detailed, complex, and engaging story - both technically and politically - about the colonization of Mars.

Thomas Friedman "The World Is Flat: A Brief History of the 21st Century" - an interesting book on the causes and effects of globalization.

Just finished Introduction to Christianity, by Pope Benedict XVI / Joseph Ratzinger. He explores christian belief by going through the Nicene creed step by step. It was interesting to listen to his homily from World Youth Day yesterday after reading this book. Many of the concerns he expressed forty years ago are current today.

I'm almost finished with High Exposure, by David Breashears. He is the climber and film maker who made the IMAX film Everest. That was the film project that took place in 1996 during the Everest disaster that Jon Krakauer wrote about in Into Thin Air. Breashears is an amazing climber and a decent writer.

Next up: The Tipping Point. I've got to see what all the Malcolm Gladwell mania is about.

And: Swimming to Antarctica. How does Lynne Cox have the mental toughness to swim in arctic waters without a wetsuit? Guess I'll find out.

Just finished reading "Flabbergasted"- I can't remember the author's name.  It's hysterical- it's about a guy in church singles group and his dating life.  It made me laugh so hard!

Cool, thanks for that one!

I read James Gleick's Genius and fell in love with Feynman. (I have a friend who, as an undergrad, actually did fall in love with Feynman. But that's another story. )

I'm currently reading a double volume of "All Creatures Great and Small, and All Things Bright and Beautiful"... by James (?) Herriot... a veterinarian. His exploits while working as a vet in the 1930's and beyond... he was mostly a large animal vet, but there are some good stories about dogs and cats too... Whizzzzzzzzzz

Last book read was the new John Irving, "Until I Find You".  A good book, but not his best. I would like to read 1776 next, or maybe The Kite Runner, since I keep hearing about it.  I hear Bill Bryson has a new one out too.  I love him, especially A Walk In The Woods -so funny!

The News from Paraguay by Lily Tuck (Lots of Sex in this one!)
Holy Blood Holy Grail
The Wall Jumper
Snow Flower and the Secret Fan by Lisa See

Yeah, I know how it is.  That's why I asked what book(s) folks were reading.  I used to be a several books at a time person myself, one for different moods and reasons.  I've since pared down to one book at a time, in an attempt to simplify a complex and busy life.

But I'm also a magazine freak... but that's for another thread.

I read the Kite Runner a couple of weeks ago--really good. And I have Bryson's 'a Short History of Almost Everything'--starting that now.  Another good one is 'The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime'--it's funny and the guy's got a very distinctive voice.

i finished Dress Your Family In Courderoy and Denim by David Sedaris last week..

Have you guys ever heard Sedaris telling his stories?  He's on This American Life now and then, and if there's anything funnier than reading his stories, it's hearing him read them.....  Lara, I'll be interested to see what you think of a particular 3 or 4 pager from Me Talk Pretty One Day, about visiting the loo during a party.  I was laughing so hard I couldn't breathe

As for reading, just finished Harry Potter, next 2 books are Jarhead by Timothy Swofford (accounts of the Gulf War) and Devil's Teeth, subtitle is "A True Story of Obsession and Survival Among America's Great WHite Sharks", set in the Farallon Islands
