Anyone been in a Seattle-area lake yet?

We have a thread on that topic going around here at work. Nobody yet. Someone took temp readings at Lk Samm and Pine Lake in Sammamish. Both around 52 - 55 degrees (IIRC Issaquah was 56 last year for the race). I think I'll wait a few more weeks.

i went in lake sammamish last  year around may 15. 

If it counts, i've been on/in the snoqualmie and green rivers. . but i was wearing a surfing wetsuit and kayaking

I put my hand in Lake Samamish to see how it feels earlier this week.  It is something that I could "Get into"...but not something I can really train in yet. 

I have a sleeveless wetsuit, so it really didn't make much sense for me to get in, 'try' swimming in it, and then get out because it is still too cold.  I would rather get a good nice workout in and not feel like I am trying to force the situaiton.  I decided to wait a couple of weeks and stick to the pool for now.

I swam in the small lake in Elma for about 300yds in April at the tri they have down there...SO COLD...painful! It definitely wasn't 60, probably not even 55! I wasn't even in the water that long but my hands were numb coming out making it tough with the wetsuit! There are a few (supervised) coldwater swims down by Lakewood WA in May/June.

I did jump into Lake Sammamish on New Years' Day..but it was about 20 seconds total. 

Mid-50s is probably "warm" enough for me to at least try to swim.  Where are those lakes you mention?  Up north? 

At this rate I think 50 degrees will be all we can ask for at Lake Coeur d'Alene in June.  Not sure how 1.5 hours of swimming in that will feel, but my guess is not good.

CDA Lake will warm up - it can jump 6 degrees in a week easy.  Every year everyone goes into a panic, and every year the swim is okay.

I am ready to jump into a lake anytime.  I was in the Puget Sound in November, but that was with boots and a neoprene cap (not all that bad).  Now its time to start getting some open water swims in.

Bumping:  anyone been  in Martha Lake yet? I drive by it daily hoping to see a swimmer. Maybe I should just bite the bullet and get in. I have a HIM in 24 days and need some OWS time.

I am going to try lake sammamish on Monday to see how this weekend affects it. 

Gasp! A Double post !

I hope you don't take it personally, but it is probably best not to.  I don't want my wife wondering who the woman is that I'm swimming with 

I finally did it this morning.  After a failed attempt on Monday, I went for a swim this morning in my sleeveless wetsuit in Lake Sammamish.

Monday Morning, I went to Lake Sammamish state park.  I was at the big beach, planning on following the bouy line.  The water was nasty, the beach was nasty, the swim area was nasty, and it was starting to rain.  There was a lot working against me.  I finally got out to my waist, but I buttercupped out of it.  It baffled me that there was a race there on Saturday.  The water was freezing. 

This morning, I sucked it up.  I drove from Issaquah with my AC on to start cooling my body down.

I got to Idylwood Park (It is AMAZING how much better this park is maintained), and sucked it up and got in...and after a minute or two, I was fine.  It was great.  I wasn't planning on swimming but just getting submerged.  After a minute or two, I decided to swim the bouys that mark no-boats.  It ended up being about 1/3 of a mile.

It was a big triumph this morning!  I am no longer afraid of the cold water.  My wetsuit (albeit sleeveless) worked great!  I am ready to do my 1 mile open water swim in Lake Sammamish from Idylwood park!
