Subject: Anyone been in a Seattle-area lake yet?

Hi all,

I'm currently training for IM CdA.  I've been hoping to start acclimating to cold water per advice of others who have done this race, so I'm wondering if anyone has been in any local lakes yet.  If so, which one and how was it?

The earliest I've ever been in a lake around here was last year, in the Issaquah tri.  Oh man was that chilly water!

Thanks!

We have a thread on that topic going around here at work. Nobody yet. Someone took temp readings at Lk Samm and Pine Lake in Sammamish. Both around 52 - 55 degrees (IIRC Issaquah was 56 last year for the race). I think I'll wait a few more weeks.

I haven't but a few here in Bellingham have. They said it wasn't too bad but cold is a very relative term. I thought about giving it a shot tomorrow.

Be forewarned, Saturday is opening day of low-land lake fishing. The lake I swim at will have people standing shoulder to shoulder around the lake including the designated swimming area. You will be viewed as a hostile threat to their prospect of landing the big one. There will also be dozens of small watercraft and they too view you as an infringement on "their" lake.

If I don't get in the lake tomorrow I'll probably wait a week or two until the stocked fish start to dwindle.

I put my hand in Lake Samamish to see how it feels earlier this week.  It is something that I could "Get into"...but not something I can really train in yet.

I have a sleeveless wetsuit, so it really didn't make much sense for me to get in, 'try' swimming in it, and then get out because it is still too cold.  I would rather get a good nice workout in and not feel like I am trying to force the situaiton.  I decided to wait a couple of weeks and stick to the pool for now.

Lake Whatcom which is a little bit larger than Lake Sammamish has been hovering around 47-49 degrees. That is still pretty darn cold.

You should try "swimming" in Lake Whatcom on President's day... had the pleasure of doing so when a boat in crew sunk. Bad times!

Hi!

I swam in the small lake in Elma for about 300yds in April at the tri they have down there...SO COLD...painful! It definitely wasn't 60, probably not even 55! I wasn't even in the water that long but my hands were numb coming out making it tough with the wetsuit! There are a few (supervised) coldwater swims down by Lakewood WA in May/June.

I have my feelers out for others ready to hit Beaver Lake or Pine Lake...last i heard they were both mid-50s...maybe a teensy bit chilly still....all we need is a couple more days of sunshine.  i am sick of the pool!  Where's our summer???  Or spring?

I did jump into Lake Sammamish on New Years' Day..but it was about 20 seconds total.

Mid-50s is probably "warm" enough for me to at least try to swim.  Where are those lakes you mention?  Up north?

At this rate I think 50 degrees will be all we can ask for at Lake Coeur d'Alene in June.  Not sure how 1.5 hours of swimming in that will feel, but my guess is not good.

CDA Lake will warm up - it can jump 6 degrees in a week easy.  Every year everyone goes into a panic, and every year the swim is okay.

I am ready to jump into a lake anytime.  I was in the Puget Sound in November, but that was with boots and a neoprene cap (not all that bad).  Now its time to start getting some open water swims in.

Bumping:  anyone been  in Martha Lake yet? I drive by it daily hoping to see a swimmer. Maybe I should just bite the bullet and get in. I have a HIM in 24 days and need some OWS time.

I completely forgot to check this thread lately. Oops! Glad to see some interest in OWS now that the weather is improving. I'm in for a group swim, PM me the time and place and I'm ready!I saw a guy changing into a wetsuit in the parking lot at Greenlake on Saturday..... Guess I'm out of excuses!

My daughter has been bugging me to get in the lake but I've had a great schedule of 3 x week in the pool. Found a time when its not crowded. It was the evening crowds at the pool that pushed me into the lake early in past years.

My first race is a little over two weeks away in Hawaii so not sure I want to start using a wetsuit before then. We get there five days before the race so I'll get some sighting and navigation practice in nice warm water. I cannot wait.

I hope you don't take it personally, but it is probably best not to.  I don't want my wife wondering who the woman is that I'm swimming with

A group of us hit Martha Lake on Thursday, water was perfect (for early season swimming).  32 mins in the water with a full suit and my feet were a little cold at the end.  We did have a guy in a sleeveless and he wasn't complaining either.  Will post additional swim dates as they happen.

I am ready to start testing some lakes around here (also prepping for CDA). The Bellevue Y (where I swim train) is closed next week for maintenance, so I'm thinking I should bump at least one pool swim to the lake. Prefer Lake Sammamish. Pine Lake or Beaver Lake doable too. Happy to meet up with anyone who wants to get wet and needs a buddy! I'd like to do :45 or so if I can handle the temps!

Today I spent 90 minutes in Beaver Lake--yes NINETY.  Without getting out.  It was definitely tolerable once the face freeze/ice cream headache went away.  Was at an OWS clinic and one of the instructors was only wearing a swimming suit for the whole time, so I didn't dare complain, with my full suit, booties, squid lid.....

I'll be swimming again on Tuesday at 615 PM at Lake Sammamish State Park with the LUNA Chix for the swim/bike brick on the Issquah Tri course, if any gals are feeling like coming along.  Free and fun!

I finally did it this morning.  After a failed attempt on Monday, I went for a swim this morning in my sleeveless wetsuit in Lake Sammamish.

Monday Morning, I went to Lake Sammamish state park.  I was at the big beach, planning on following the bouy line.  The water was nasty, the beach was nasty, the swim area was nasty, and it was starting to rain.  There was a lot working against me.  I finally got out to my waist, but I buttercupped out of it.  It baffled me that there was a race there on Saturday.  The water was freezing.

This morning, I sucked it up.  I drove from Issaquah with my AC on to start cooling my body down.

I got to Idylwood Park (It is AMAZING how much better this park is maintained), and sucked it up and got in...and after a minute or two, I was fine.  It was great.  I wasn't planning on swimming but just getting submerged.  After a minute or two, I decided to swim the bouys that mark no-boats.  It ended up being about 1/3 of a mile.

It was a big triumph this morning!  I am no longer afraid of the cold water.  My wetsuit (albeit sleeveless) worked great!  I am ready to do my 1 mile open water swim in Lake Sammamish from Idylwood park!

Mr. Crampy's multisport is putting on another free clinic at Beaver Lake on Sunday 9-11 AM. I went a couple of weeks ago and it was great!  90 minutes in the water, with coaching and tons of great race scenario practice.  I'm going to the one again on Sunday, although may do more swimming and less coaching, as they are setting up some additional buoys.  It's nice, they have paddle board, buoys, kayaks and really great coaches.... you should check it out!
