With the cold weather this spring I'm not sure I can handle the water temps for the Milton Sprint Triathlon so I am considering the Du.  Has anyone been crazy enough to go in the water yet?  I am hoping to get a couple of OWS in before I make my final decision.

I tried an OWS on the weekend and it was freaking cold. It was in Scugog, and the local fishermen were saying it was 13º (55ºF). I had booties, which helped awesome with my feet, but my hands and face were numb and stinging after like ten strokes so I gave up. Last year Milton wasn't bad at all though. I did Kelso a couple times before the race, and a buddy of mine even had no problems in just a Speedo. I'm sure it should be warm enough by then.

Kelso Open Water Swim club starts up on May 21st again.  By June 5th it will be chilly but it will be fine.  It's only 750M

The first time I did Milton I was in a shorty wetsuit and was fine.

It's not that bad.

Looking forward to it again this year.

The rain last year was colder than the water...I thought I was the only one without a wetsuit! I think I'll rent one this year.

I see your from Burlington as well, where abouts do you rent one from? I've got a scuba wet suit, but from what I've read so far, that might not be the best bet? (or maybe it really doesn't matter at only 750m).

It matters - just think about taking 750+ strokes in your scuba suit.  It's not designed to swim in.  Swim & Sports rent wetsuits, they're located in Mississauga on Eglinton and Tomken.

I'm pretty sure RunningFree in Milton rents suits as well.

What is the Kelso OWS club all about? Is it like a master's swim club? Do they provide some coaching?

I've done Milton 7 times, temps ranging from single digits to 30C.

One constant is a discussion about the water temps prior to the race. Water temps at Kelso change very quickly, and race day water temps are greatly influenced by the weather a few days prior to the race. A few years ago it was cool, wet spring and trisport reported a water temp just over 60F on Monday. A couple of days of sunny weather race week, and the water was over 70.
In any case, you will be fine in a wetsuit.

I disagree with the posts about your wetsuit. I did 2 years in a body glove wetsuit. It was fine, not as good as a neoprene but if that is all you have wear it in Milton and you will be fine.

Good luck, this is a fun race, tough course, and a nice start to the season.

No coaching but lifguards out in kayaks that provide a "marked" 1500M (roughly) swim loop.  Usually 10-15 swimmers out.

I did the try a tri there last year too.  What an unbelievably cold, wet morning that was, huh?  Yikes!

I chose Guelph instead of Milton this year but good luck to you guys next week!

Hi everyone,

I raced Milton last year and I will be there on the 5th as well.

I have a group of friends that headed out to Kelso this last weekend for a training session, they attempted a swim but the water was way too cold. One made it out about 600m and had to turn back, another got a splitting headache.

With that said, temperatures are supposed to climb until race day, so the water temperature should go up a couple of degrees, I'm considering wearing a thicker swim cap under the race one. Lets just hope for a dry morning, unlike last year.

I went for a 1000m swim at Kelso today. The water is still COLD.

I wore my wetsuit so my body was fine but my feet, hands and especially head suffered. My head is sensative to cold and I was develping a headache at the end. The lake will warm up a bit before the race but a wetsuit is highly recommended and even a neoprene head cap might be a good idea for those who are cold sensative.

For those who've never swam here, the water is a dark tea colour and there are some weeds but its clean and safe. I'm not doing the race this year but best of luck and have fun to those racing.

The weather wasn't exactly what i had in mind for my first tri in almost 20 years. I'll be at the guelph one too, it'll be my first olympic distance.
