Subject: What is wrong with people????

I was driving to work this morning and as I pulled up to a red light there was a top-down jeep wrangler in the left turn only lane emblazoned with "Seniors 2011".  Young blond haired girl driving it.

As I pull to a stop, I notice...SHE'S NOT WEARING A SEATBELT.

Really?  Seriously?  Do you want to live to see your graduation?

I just cannot comprehend why any capable adult would drive a car without the seatbelt on.  I can't even move my car from the driveway into the garage without feeling awkward if I don't put the seatbelt on.  Seatbelts don't get in the way or cause any discomfort....WEAR THEM!

I expect lack of seatbelts out of the older generation...they grew up without them, they may lack the mobility/dexterity to get them on (should they be driving in that case?), etc. etc.  None of that makes it right I might add.  But a girl that is currently a senior in high school should have grown up with seatbelts being an every day part of life.  It should be as natural to her as putting on her clothes to get ready in the morning.

I don't get it...

I agree with everything you said.

Keep in mind, if it was an OLD jeep it only came with lap belts.  You might have missed it.

I got pulled over in mine once and the cop was going to ding me for not wearing my seatbelt.  I WAS wearing it, but he couldn't see it because it wasn't a shoulder belt.

Nope, I looked several times.  I could see the actual shoulder strap hanging there not being used....and it wasn't that she just didn't put the shoulder part on, it was hanging perfectly vertically...both straps....

As a jeep wrangler owner, she is crazy not to wear the seatbelt.  As much as i love the car, it is not very safe and really easy to get ejected off the vehicle if you are involved in a crash.

Hopefully that was a one time thing and she normally wears it, even if doubt it.

This is called culling the gene pool.  Sounds like she is from the shallow end.

I don't get that either!  I was such a stickler and still am when it comes to my kids and seat belts.  I went to those free demos for car seat safety when they were babies and would only let certain members of my family drive them and they had to pass car seat knowledge and demonstration before I would put my babies in their cars.    Now that my children are older they put on the seatbelt first thing  (we all do).  When they go with other people I remind them "wear your seatbelt!"  They get tired of me telling them.  But a few weeks ago I had one of my daughter's friends in the car.  She commented that in her family they never used seatbelts, but that my daughter had already told her "how I am."  So she puts the seatbelt on then proceeds to put the shoulder harness behind her.  My oldest says to her, "why even bother if you arent' going to wear the shoulder harness?"  She says it was just too uncomfortable and my daughter said "well if you were used to wearing it, you wouldn't even notice it."  So I thought, at least I've taught this kid something.  Now, if I could just teach her to keep her room clean and pick up after herself.

Dirty rooms and not picking up after herself won't kill her (unless she's a total klutz like me).  I think you concentrated on the right stuff. :-)

As my buddy would say...
Her gene pool needs a lifeguard.

I feel naked without my seat belt on. I also was pretty blown away when way back in high school was actually made fun of by some girls for putting my seat belt on. I was blown away by that.

I have the same reaction when I see teenagers smoking.  I know it isn't necessarily as urgent as wearing your seatbelt...but with all the info we have today about the health risks...and how much money they cost, and how really disgusting (sorry to all those smokers out there) they are...how can you even start.  I just don't get it.

If she's not she at least thinks she is; the seat belt would mess up her look.

I was so mad I was thinking about rolling down my window to yell at her.  But since I was in uniform I decided it wasn't a smart plan (drawing attention to yourself in uniform is rarely a good plan).

I kept thinking she was on the phone because of where her left hand was, but she wasn't.  When the light turned green she pulled away and she definitely had some piece of paper in her hand she was referencing.

I think the BT boys would have been pleased with the appearance.  The "Seniors 2011" and the blond hair are what drew my attention to the vehicle.  I was getting a closer look to see what seniors in high school look like these days (I am a horrible judge of age).  She was wearing one of those shirts that show your bra straps so badly I wonder why people bother wearing a bra in the first place with them.  I was trying to figure out if the shirt was really designed to be worn that way when I spotted the lack of seatbelt.

I just couldn't help thinking, "You are about to graduate from high school...one of the huge defining moments in a person's life...and you are completely clueless about the danger you have put yourself in."

Wow. Who cares if she has a seat belt on? Yeah she is stupid for it, and she should be wearing one as everyone should.

If I were to get pissed off at all the people I see that suck at driving ( you have no idea of the amount of people that dont know what "merge" and "yield" means, amongst other things) I would never have a voice from yelling obscenities  out my car window.

Let it go, its not your problem. If she wants to fly out of her seat during an accident, and slide her face across the pavement, then so be it.

I agree with you wholeheartedly, but you really answered your own question... in this day and age I would doubt that "capable adult" could be used to describe very many 17 YO high school seniors.

True, but somebody's ... i.e., Jen's ... tax money has to pay for someone to scrape that mess up off the road, bring whatever's left to an ER, and the treatment.

My sister (and PERHAPS others closely related to her) have a bad habit of rolling down the window and catcalling hot piglets who are riding or running on the road.

Yesterday we were in a car together, and I refused to join her (though he was a juicy piglet indeed) because he didn't have a helmet on.

Most of my life I have not worn a seat belt.  It's the law now so I do.  Is it dangerous not wearing one?  Of course.  It's also dangerous riding a bike or motorcycle on the road.  Even more dangerous when these people don't where a helmet.  But an adult should be able to make that choice for themselves and they do.  I look at the seatbelt law no differently.

I took German in High School and our teacher had German magazines around the classroom. Apparently their censorship laws are quite different from ours; there was an automotive safety add featuring a very attractive girl topless with a bruise across her chest in the outline of a seat belt shoulder strap.
