Subject: RE: Lake Minnetonka Triathlon : Official ThreadI'm an Excelsior local and will be helping with Saturday's race. Good luck to everyone - we welcome you to our town with open arms. This is a great event and we love having a local triathlon each year.
A few things:
1. Parking: At 6am on a Saturday morning, parking won't be a problem. There are two big public lots behind the stores that are a 1-2 block walk from the transition area, and the little streets in Excelsior have lots of little nooks and crannies with spots. The residential block right next to the lake is permit-only and they do ticket (signage is clear ). If they didn't, these poor folks would have cars and boat trailers parked in front of their homes all summer long. No signs means it is fair game.
2. Swim: Lake Minnetonka can get a good chop with a breeze, but it is usually from the South or West. That means that you only need to contend with it for a short bit before you turn to the East. If your nervous, know that this RD has lots and lots of very good lifegaurds in the water. More than your average race, in my opinion.
3. Bike: Just did the bike course (literally, finished 20 mins ago ). Great course with generally nice conditions. The hill on Lake Lucy can catch you off gaurd, and when you get to the bottom of it you have to turn around and do it again. It is not as flat as one would expect, but without wind has the potential to be a fast ride. The huge flag in downtown Chanhassen that you see about 2.5 miles into the ride will tell you if the wind you feel is real. You can't miss it.
4. Run: Yeah, this run course is as fast as they come. Flat on hard-pack limestone. You can't ask for a better surface.
Good luck, and if you are so inclined hang out after the race and support the local businesses! Edited by Hazelmn 2011-06-13 11:40 AM
