Ironman Melbourne Announcement from WTC

This little piggie is SOOOOOOO EXCITED!!!

Registration opens August 28th afternoon (Oz time). I am over the moon with excitement. It's been a grave disappointment to me that I've gotten 15 weeks or more through training for THREE different irons I'd registered for, then not been able to do them for some reason.

(And sucked up $1000 total in race fees last year for races I couldn't do)

So personally, this is a huge deal, and for this part of the world too--especially Australia, which I feel has been rather overlooked given its breadth and depth of triathlon interest and talent ...

THAT'S IT! I'm gonna 5150 you!

That was a very bad joke that may not make sense in Canadia-land.

Of course I'm signing up. Maybe you should 5150 me.

Or maybe you should sign up, too.

Ok, I will admit to having to Google the 5150 reference (I thought you were referring to the 5150 triathlon series......)

As for me signing up, if I wasn't already signed up for Mont Tremblant, I would probably give this one some serious thought.  It would be a great excuse to get myself to Australia.

yes, that was the bad joke ... it was a pun. NOT SO PUNNY, EH? I slay myself.

What? Mont Tremblant? Pffffftttt ...

All right, you're off the list, any other piglets game??? Think of it--AUSTRALIA! And I hear the bike course is smokin' fast. A little boring, perhaps, but ssssssmokin' fast.

Not quite ready for an IM yet but I may go watch it. Just looked at the proposed course - description anyway - and given that the bike course is along a highway/toll road I'd be surprised if it wasn't fast. They're all pretty much flat as except the on/off ramps.

Ha ... Bryan trains way too much to be as practiced at smack talk as I am

But there are a lot of Kona slots available at Melbourne. A. LOT.

I'm willing to put up my IM swim time to his. (See, I've started already!!!) then let's double the bike and run time

Horribly sadly, I don't think this race will be on his calendar.

I'm more excited than Yanti, looks like my first IM is going to be in my backyard (literally, the bike and run legs go 300 metres either side of my house).

This is going to be a fast course, I've ridden the freeway the bike is going to be on quite a few times prior to when it opened just under 2 years ago and it's almost flat, with just a bit of a rise up away from the transition.  Back then I was doing around high 20's km/hr on the way out, and 40km/hr on the way home (my bike riding now is a bit stronger, I was definitely BOP then).  Over half of it is protected from side winds.  I used to enjoy this particular ride even in pouring rain, and then they went and spoilt the road by putting cars on it and banning bikes.  I'm predicting the top end riders are going to do well under 5 hours on this one.

The run is along the bay, fairly flat with only a few short sharp hills to contend with.  This is the old Melbourne Marathon course.

The swim is in my preferred area for open water swim training, the beach has a gentle slope away so if planning on racing this one, get some practice in running out of the water for 50-75 metres.  I've never noticed any tide assistance there, but will wait to see where the course is actually going to be.  99.9% of being a wetsuit swim at that time of the year.

This is the race I've been waiting for!!  To race my first IM at home will be awesome, can't wait.  Just hope the registration process is smooth sailing and everyone who wants to get in does.

As others have said, the bike course will be flat, fast and boring.  Guess the organisers couldn't get Beach Rd for the bike course, but the swim and run will be great.  Unless there's a huge northerly blowing in which case the run could be a little messy

Bring it on!!!!!!!

Well you lot...I'm super excited as well. If I am only ever to do one of these silly events this is to be it.

Unfortunately I will not be able to get myself in any condition to complete the course by 2012 I am seriously considering 2013.

But you will not be able to keep me away in 2012. I plan to volunteer and I will hang around the finish until the finish. I can't wait.

I rode the Eastlink too for the opening...what a wonderfully fast surface. And the run will be pretty good too...if you're in any condition to appreciate it.

Now, if only can find a way to shed 100Lbs and actually get in shape...

Would love to re-visit Melbourne, lived there for a year 10 years ago, and it's still the best city i've ever lived in!

Everyone that gets transferred from the US at my work usually gets a pre-start trip to find a rental property, decide where to live etc...

Having said that, it's not going to be the most friendly course for the spectators, the bike is a straight line up and back and the run is a one way trip, so no setting the family up to watch from one spot and saying hi each time you go by.
