It can be pretty depressing to log on (okay, I never log OUT) and see all the great training and races and toys and whatnot everyone's enjoying when you're laid up.

What are you doing to keep yourself alive/put back together/entertained/less crazy?

Feel free to chime in if you're doing fine and have some love or experience for us.

Hi, I'm Yanti, in the last 16 or so months:

Dengue fever
Concussion
Chikungunya (continuing arthritis)
Typhoid fever
Pneumonia
Concussion + 3 bruised ribs
Dengue fever + typhoid fever (continuing ...)

Today, I slept all day, and I really needed to. Have needed to for a long time.

I feel your pain, when I was sidelined with the gastrocs injury it was incredibly difficult to see other people running or a having great bike rides.  Races, particularly ones I was scheduled to enter but had to bail out of were horrible for me.

I focused on what I could do.....but we know I really didn't like that and now I rarely choose to swim.....more like I know I have to but the forced swim focus sucked my will to live some days.

You have to let your body heal, it's the sad truth.  Take enjoyment in the simple things you are able to do, even if it's a 10 to 15 minute walk because that's all the body will allow.

Ooh! I should go on a walk!!! Heh. LOL. I don't think I could do even that right now. I do think we overlook what we call the mental/emotional recovery too. I'm really depressed right now.

I will say that yoga has been a lifesaver. Not crazy-azz ankles under the ears yoga ... just really basic asanas (poses) and stretching. No matter how sick I am I can usually manage to sit up and do some of that and it's great. The lying-down poses and child's pose are great too.

I was pretty healthy this year until a really bad intestinal bacterial infection (Shigella) a few weeks ago.  I'm still not 100% but geting better.  I'm trying to rest as much as possible.  I do a lot of sleeping.

Get better soon everyone!

Based on your post I'm a little scared to go visit Bali now. It sounds like the mosquitoes are either stinging you or bashing you over the head with a baseball bat. Also, I don't mean to alarm you, but I think there is a big spider on your face.

Let me know if you ever visit Singapore and we'll go for a run at East Coast Park.

Oh very timely thread Yanti.....

Last year I had knee surgery for an osteochondral defect, went through 6 weeks of crutches and then countless weeks of rehab.......only to be in the  same position again exactly one year later. Had my second surgery on Friday.

Right now? Day 2 of 6 weeks no weight bearing.

At least 8 hours a day in a continuous passive motion machine.

Sanity is highly over rated........

Aw thanks, Mark! I was just there for 10 days but literally every single minute was taken up. You HAVE to go see David Greenfield at Elite Bicycles, though ... just check out the shop (across from Thomson Medical) and ask him what he's all about. You've got the best bike man / athletic trainer in the world there and he's super friendly and will talk to anyone. Especially if you tell him you are a friend of Yanti's Seriously, there's a lot to recommend there, but it's really fun just to pick his brain.

But I love her and she was my long and faithful pet and it's that time of year for creepy spooky things--until enough people on BT start threads in COJ about this avatar and I finally take it down.

Really sick and morbid stuff is making me happy right now ...

How can one think about anything else whilst looking at your face ??

And the spider on it of course...

But your lovely face is distracting enough.

OK so that I keep this thread to the theme.......here is my plan to keep from losing my mind:

1. crutch my way over to the pull up bar I installed a couple of weeks ago, and work on getting a ripped upper bdy

2. do whatever core stuff I can that does not involve weight bearing

3. learn to bake artisan bread......the kind that requires 3 days to produce one loaf

4. finally get around to solving the mystery of Photoshop so that I can start properly editing my photos

5.speaking of photos.....I shall also continue to do my 365, no point in stopping now even if the nest few weeks of pics will be lame shots from within my house

^^^^ Gee it all sounds so good on paper, when the reality is that right now I do not feel like doing jack shyte except moping and feeling sorry for myself.

I hear ya.

As for the bread, you do actually get to eat it, right?

Another thought for we indisposed ... if ever you wanted to write a book, this is the time, easy way, and all the motivation and support in the world to do it ...

I just have to pop in and say how in awe I constantly am of people on here struggling through injuries.  The sheer determination of you all to get back on your feet is amazing and inspiring.

I've been fortunate enough to never really have to struggle through any injuries in some time.  The last one was a back injury that kept me from doing anything active for roughly a year.  Oddly enough, it was in no way related to any training I was doing.  That was a fairly depressing time and looking back, wish I would have known about this place then.

Indeed I get to eat the bread  I will bake....gluten and I are good friends thank goodness.

A book??

When I was a little girl I always thought I would grow up to be a writer for some reason.

I wrote a lot as a child and had this vision of myself as an adult, sitting at a typewriter ( OK I am showing my age here I realize.........) in a tiny apartment,  by a window, rain falling softly outside ..........

One of my students is participating in this. He looks forward to it all year. Even has a tee-shirt?

Aqua-Girl -- I think writing sounds like a great idea. I am so sorry you have to just sit there in that thing for 8 hours every day. I can recommend some reading, if you want? The Russians are long winded and complicated, and would take up a lot of your time. But not without great reward. I love them.

So... to all you invalids and sickos... remember what you're in this life to achieve. You are here to better yourself. To train your body to be healthy. Remember that part of that training entails learning how to deal with set backs and keep moving forward. Don't give up... stay positive... NEVER quit.

I KNEW the sickos would start crawling out of the woodwork with this thread and you have it exactly right.

What we're all going through or have gone through is a really important part of life AND EVEN training. It's hard to keep sight of that and I hope we continue to encourage each other with that thought and the others who are soon to join us.

Took some rest time to heal up the last 3 weeks and relaxed.  It's less stressful and re-energizes me, actually.

Aw, thanks my phavorite Phil. Yeah, this last year has been exceptionally difficult, although I always seemed to get myself in some heap of trouble in the States, too. I live BIG. Big good, big bad, just huge. And I'm grateful for it, all, just NOT RIGHT NOW!!!

I've started running again after having some complications/problems/pain in the left hip a little over 3 weeks ago.  It feels fine now and I'm taking my time building it back up.  I wanted so badly to run the half-barrel (13.1 mile) Tyranena beer run that is in the next week or two, but I'm not going to risk it and the entry is closed now.  Stupid injury.

I'm starting to go bonkers here.  My post below from the Oct challenge thread details what happened to me Thursday night after being gone all week on a trip without any workouts.  Just had half a bag of Dorito's, I so want to get out and do something. Instead I did the hop-a-long thing with my wife at the grocery store.

We all need to some positive vibs!

Donto - 2011-10-28 1:05 PM

Well I won't be making my goal for team SE.  Got back from a business trip late last night and was all set in getting in the runs I needed today thru Monday.  Instead I go to get into bed at 1:30 AM and somehow slipped.  I  smashed my big toe into the bed rail and snagged the nail, ripped it back so that it was standing straight up.  Yeah ouch!  Can't wear shoes right now and doc said I probably won't be running for about a week. Frown

I did count my pulse last night at one point to be 44 based on the throbs per minute as I laid in bed at 3am with my foot up on a pillow!

Mine is my achilles from July 30th.  I am starting to run a little but it's really slow coming.  So I have been getting fat and lazy.  Oh I find the injury has given me time to catch up on time with the family

Hang in there Helen

Oh man, do I feel you guys.  I'm on the "recovered and attempting to regain lost fitness" side of things.  I had a NASTY IT Band injury last September that prevented me from running at ALL for months.  Finally found a doctor who figured out how to treat it after rest, PT, etc. didn't help and started in February with my first week being a grand total of 8 miles of 4 minute walk/1 minute run.  In the meantime, it sucked having to choose between the pool and the trainer, especially when running is my first love.  I did a pretty good amount of swimming (for me), but still lost a lot of general fitness in addition to run-specific fitness.

I'm full-on running now and even ran a HM three weeks ago, even if it was way off my PR. It certainly IS a long road even after you recover.
