Subject: Fav foreign flicks?

I used to rent foreign flicks all the time, but have fallen off. Don't know what's out there anymore...anyone have some suggestions?

Some of my old favorites are: Jean de Florette/Manou of the Spring, To Live, Madadayo, Diva, Raise High the Red Lantern...just to name a few off the top of my head.

Would you call the UK foreign?  If so, Lock Stock & Two Smoking Barrels is one of my all time favorite movies.

How about Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (Chinese).  That movie rocked!!!

Ya, I think we can include UK movies. But -doh!- I've seen both of those! Jeez, is Lock the only decent thing Guy has ever made? Is Snatch any good?

Just read a review of this...sounds great! From review:

"Its plot involves the diminutive, club-footed Madame Souza preparing her orphaned grandson, Champion, to be a world-beating cyclist by personally supervising his arduous training regime."

Making notes...

With a synopsis like that it sounds comical!!!

Snatch is a good movie if you can tolerate Brad Pitt.

Is this a silent movie? I always struggle with watching silent movies...the soundtracks make me feel kinda crazy.

JeepFleeb - 2005-10-13 8:56 AM 'M' by Fritz Lang.  It was made in 1931 and is one of best movies I've ever seen.  It's about a child-molester/murderer who the German police just can't catch.  Eventually groups of organized criminals start to get tired of all the extra police everywhere interfering with their business, so they join in the hunt for the sick-o.

Oh I love those old French films. Have you seen the other Gong Li movies - Red Sorghum, Farewell my Concubine (can't think of the other names)? I own Amelie - love it!

This summer I caught quite a few foreign films. Enjoyed them very much.

You've got to see "Mondovino."

Red Sorghum, Farewell my Concubine,  Mondovino.

Great suggestions. The latter is my first to track down - love documentaries and wine!

The best I ever saw was "Diabolique".

It's a dark movie with a great edge-of-your-seat plot. The American remake with Sharon Stone was poorly done. See the original French version. If you haven't seen it, don't read the reviews. It's much better if you don't know anything about the plot to start with.

On the other end of the spectrum "Elvira Madigan" is the most beautiful movie I've ever seen. Not much of a story, but the filming is a beautiful work of art.

Leaving out any sexual innuendoes, I personally thought Snatch was better than LS & 2 SB.

Every year I check out some flicks at the Vancouver International Film Festival and I have never been disappointed. So far this year, I have seen a Croatian movie _Sorry_About_Kung_Foo_ which was good and quite funny. I saw some excellent Swedish flicks in 2003, but their names escape me right now. Oh and I've just seen _Scared_Scared_ which was an excellent Canadian flick. Not foreign for me, but it would be for you.

There was a very highly acclaimed foreign flick about the Tour De France at the VIFF this year, but I missed all of the showings because I was in Hawaii. It was called _Hell_On_Wheels_ and should be available on DVD in November, I think.

A recent find for me was "Amelie," and I hear that "A Very Long Engagement" is really good too. For recent Wuxia movies, I liked "Hero", "Crouching Tiger-Hidden Dragon" and I actually did like "House of Flying Daggers"... It was more of a bizzare love triangle movie with wuxia elements than a striaght wuxia movie, but that's OK with me. I'm a big fan of Ziyi Zhang

Oh good...no one's mentioned "Run Lola Run." You have to watch the sub-titled version, though. It'll leave you more breathless than  a track workout.
