| Pro 4040 | Subject: RE: Fav foreign flicks? What about La Grande Seduction (english version: Seducing Dr. Lewis)? Quebec made and apparently a real crowd pleaser. I enjoyed it. It played in Perth, Australia at the outdoor cinema at UWA last year when my parents were there and it got applause. Mel, were you there? - Ravenous? I don't know if it is a foreign film, but I liked it. - Tanguy. A French film about a guy who doesn't want to leave home, but who's parents really want him out. I almost died laughing. One of the funniest films I've seen in awhile. |

Les Visiteurs - better than the American re-make Männer - (Men) - A rarity - a German comedy ca 1986 Chocolat was not really a foreign film, but it acted like one. Spirited Away, Castle in the Sky, Howl's Moving Castle - my daughter loves Hayao Miyazaki films. I second the recommendations for das Boot, Cité des Enfants Perdu, and Amelie |

For other awesome Chinese flicks: To Live: starring Gong Li, anointed by Esquire mag this year as the sexiest woman in the slightly older category. (jessica biel is for the young t&a, gong li is the next age category up, and sharon stone was the winner for the next). she is really beautiful. anyway, it's about the cultural revolution in china, and it actually represents it pretty well, banned in China. Kung Fu Hustle - a crazy stylistic kung fu/qi movie. House of Flying Daggers - ohhh, it was so visually stunning. Fist of Legend - an old Jet Li fight movie, it's great. Be There of Be Square - a cute movie set in LA Ok, enough chinese movies. I think this is a british movie, but you can find it in the regular sections of blockbuster: SLIDING DOORS. i LOOOOOOOOOOOOVE this movie. love it. I almost died laughing. One of the funniest films I've seen in awhile. Hey Opus yep I did see that at the Summerville (outdoor movies at UWA) it was on for a week during our Arts Festival here. I really enjoyed it too. the summerville is the perfect place to watch a movie in summer here. Outdoor movie in deckchairs with pine trees and stars for a backdrop to the screen. Its perfect for a scary movie atmosphere too. |

That's good to know, I liked Shaolin Soccer a lot, and have been looking forward to seeing Kung Fu Hustle. Also, Wifey just got me the trilogy box set of Once Upon a Time in China (old Jet Li stuff) - pretty good so far. Iron Monkey is another good oldie with Donnie Yen. And I'll second "Waking Ned Divine" as a good one. Wifey and I recently rented "The Sea Within" about Ramon Sampedro. That was pretty good too. Also "Downfall" was a recent find. It's a German movie based on the memoirs of one of Hitler's secretaries. The movie covers the last moments in the Berlin bunker (4 or 6 week time period maybe?). Really well done. -Frank |

I've seen so many foreign films, I can barely remember what they're all called, but some of my favs are Motorcycle Diaries; Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter...and Spring; A Very Long Engagement; some Spanish Film I totally forget the name of; Swimming Pool... Speaking of Swimming Pool - and I've noticed some of you posted this film earlier - I saw it in the theater when it first came out and told my boyfriend how good I thought it was and that he should see it (granted, he hates foreign films, is more of a big-hollywood movie kinda guy). Fast forward a few years, my bf catches the movie on HBO or something last week. I am at his house when he tells me that he finally saw the film, so his roommate, overhearing our conversation, asks, "What is the movie about?" My boyfriend replies: "It's about some hot chick who walks around naked all the time." As for my all-time favorite movies: In America, Hotel Rwanda, Forrest Gump, and Almost Famous |
