Does anyone here know anything about Ithaca, NY?  I was curious- is there a lot to do, is it a big city with lots of stuff to do?  Just curious.  All I know is that it's in upstate NY and is pretty cold but it's pretty.  That's about it.  There's a possiblity I could transfer there with my job, but I don't know enough about it yet.  I don't want to move up north and deal with the cold nad long winters, but if the city is cool enough I could be persuaded.

I know it'd only take you 4 hours to drive to IM Lake Placid, but about 20 to drive to IM FL.

You'd get to race with me once a year at the Cayuga Lake Triathlon.
On the bright side, there are plenty of hills to train on.

The tri scene is good here in upstate NY. Plenty of races and Ithaca has a well regarded tri club.  Most tri club memberships around here also get you discounts on snowshoeing equipment.

Upstate NY is gorgeous and a great place to live for 2/3 of the year. Winters can be tough. Ithaca is pretty much the quintessential nice, northeastern college town.

Check with Tri Take Me Away, she's from the area. Then again, she moved to Florida.

I'm not helping am I?

Ithaca is a wonderful place.  It's dominated by Cornell and Ithaca college.  Small town, full of big town people.

Four hours to New York, the greatest city in the world!  New York City culture and mindset is part of the fabric of upstate New York.

It would be helpful if you like winter sports.

And yea, Ithaca is Gorges!

Yup - what everyone else said. When I was living in Syracuse, I did a lot training and racing down in Ithaca. Now, of course, I do my training and racing around the Lake Placid area, but I'd say that's the only place better in Upstate, NY to do so other than Ithaca.

College town atmosphere, for sure, and lots of great athletics folks everywhere.

Ithaca is great.  Small town but very diverse population due to Cornell and Itahca College.  You better be a liberal, though.  And like lake-effect snow.  It is pretty isloated, too.  That whole area is very rural.  I grew up about 45 mintues away, and yes it is very, very beautiful but the winters totally suck.  Totally.

I would live there.  The food is great.  The people are great. The waterfalls and gorges are great.  But you will miss out on the big city things.  The nearest decent mall is Carousel Mall in Syracuse which is a 1:30 drive roughly.  And that doesn't mean a Nordstroms or Neimans.  There is a mall in Ithaca but it is small.

One of the best things about living up there is going to Friendly's and ordering a Fribble.  Just cuz that's the funniest word ever. Or going to the Commons food court and choosing between pizza, great indian food, or a vegan cheeseburger. Or the Moosewood. I went to bike shop up by Cornell last time I was there and they seemed pretty knowledgeable.  That area of NY if FULL of cyclists.

PM me if you want to talk about it some more.

Jess

Hmmm...doesn't sound too exciting.  I don't think Ithaca is for me.  I need more people, excitement, things to do, warmer weather...thanks for the input!
