Pro 4040 | Subject: How do BTers affect your life? How the people on this board affect my life: I got the Garmin because Bear said it was the best training tool he owned. I read "Love in the Time of Cholera" because Renee said it was her favourite book. I'm sure there are other things, but I can't think of them right now. Anybody else here have examples of how the people in this little community have affected you? EDIT: I forgot the most obvious one: I train at masters swimming with Soloryder. That is when I'm not suffering from vertigo (which, btw, finally seems to be gone). Edited by Opus 2005-12-28 8:44 AM |

Buttercup 14334 | Subject: RE: How do BTers affect your life? Very funny, guys! Rob, what did you think of Love In the Time of Cholera? I think The World According to Garp might be up there on my list of favorites, too, as is A Prayer For Owen Meany. The Little Prince is definitely one... I can't decide which is my favorite! As for your thread Q:

Elite 2673 Muskego, WI | Subject: RE: How do BTers affect your life? The training logs are awesome. I didn't do much with them until the Dec. swim challenge. Now I've got all these kick a## athletes looking, or potentially looking at my training. That has gotten me out of bed a few times, and had me kick up the workouts a notch. I got "Into the Void" as my Christmas reading thanks to this site as well. I think chipmunkheart recommended it. |

Pro 4040 | Subject: RE: How do BTers affect your life? Renee - 2005-12-28 9:58 AM Very funny, guys! Rob, what did you think of Love In the Time of Cholera? I think The World According to Garp might be up there on my list of favorites, too, as is A Prayer For Owen Meany. The Little Prince is definitely one... I can't decide which is my favorite! Renee, it's obvious that we share the same tastes in literature. I read The World According to Garp about 16 years ago and it had a huge impact on me. I went on to read everything that John Irving had written. I find I've outgrown him in recent years, although I've continued to read his new books. I liked A Prayer for Owen Meany, I see that book as the last truly inspired work Irving has produced. Love in the Time of Cholera almost defies description. I have a hard time believing that another human being is capable of creating such imagery. There is no clearer example of literature as art. Like food for a chef or paint for a painter, Garcia Marquez takes words, just normal words, and puts them together to create a unique piece of art on every page, in every paragraph. Am I overreaching? Probably, but read this: "Florentino Ariza felt the blow in the very center of his heart. He would have like to find a reply as rapid and well aimed as an arrow, but the burden of age defeated him: he had never been so exhausted by so brief a conversation, he felt pain in his heart, and each beat echoed with a metallic resonance in his arteries. He felt old, forlorn, useless, and his desire to cry was so urgent that he could not speak." I literally opened the book and selected the first passage that my eyes fell on. |

Crystal Lake, IL | Subject: RE: How do BTers affect your life? KNOWLEDGE!!! When I think how much I would have floundered (flounder = memory of my first training swim!)having to learn about all of this stuff on my own it boggles the mind. This site has been unbelievable in focusing and accelerating my training toward my first triathlon. When I first decided on this, having done zero research, last August I had one goal: complete an Olympic triathlon. Now my sights are set on milestones that might have taken me several years to acheive without the concentration of information available here. Most of that information is available to me because the people here who have "been there/done that" never seem to tire of newbie questions and helping us out and that's what's great about this place. I really can't say enough great things about this place. Thanks Ron, thanks BT'ers, for making this the healthiest year of my life (which is so ironic due to me being diagnosed with Celiac disease in September-go figure!). |

Master 1938 La Crosse | Subject: RE: How do BTers affect your life? I ran this last week even though I was on vacation with family because madkat puts together one bumpin' mix tape, and possum organized the exchange. I have metal pants clips for my bike commute because akabak sent 'em to me. I discovered the joys of whole wheat pitas because someone (sorry, can't remember) in Nutritional Cafe told me to eat them. Miko? Which reminds me, where the hell is Miko? I crave banana and whey protein smoothies after workouts because TH3_FRB made them sound so appealing. And TH3's crazy-fast running kung-fu style is an inspiration in itself, making my own running goals look entirely plausible. I have a google mail account because of Brett Two general shout-outs: I was much more likely to work out these last four months logging on BT than I would have been otherwise. It was a crazy busy time for me at work, and I don't think I would have worked out as much or as regularly without the knowledge that certain people were going to be reading my logs . . . I am much more likely to be confident in my decisions as I begin to spend an insane amount of money on gear in the next few months. After all, expert and semi-expert advice is just a click away. The Original 7834 Raleigh/Durham | Subject: RE: How do BTers affect your life? I push myself harder when I train knowing that other people are viewing my logs. I've gotten a lot tougher and instead of whining I just "suck it up buttercup". Been encouraged and inspired to do an IM. Listened to Tricomet and during my 1st 1/2 IM- ate frequently and never bonked. Also took it easy on the bike to save my legs for the run. It was fun passing people on the run- just like Comet told me! Some of the best advice I've listened to! Have learned that I'm not the only person who has bad training days. I've learned sooo much tri knowledge here- it's been great and extremely helpful! And not to mention that I'll always be able to meet up with BT'ers at races even if I go to the race alone. |

Master 2278 State of Confusion | Subject: RE: How do BTers affect your life? Knowledge. Motivation. Those are the main reasons I read and participate on BT. I also enjoy everyone's different intellectual perspectives and admire the folks that aren't afraid to go against the grain. I wouldn't say I'm timid, not at all, but a little shy, and don't like to rock the boat. I find myself a little more confident in expressing my opinions, and a lot more competitive than I thought. Now I just need to get into the habit of posting my workouts in the logs. I am terrible about it. I did really well when Tania (where IS she?) was reading my logs and sending encouragement. I also like to read other's training logs for tips and additional ideas/motivation. Great stuff. But the virtual world can get a bit freaky. Also, as Opus said, "I ride lots because Bear said to." Now I am obsessed with riding my bike. (Not so much in the really wet weather though.) |

Elite 2768 Raleigh | Subject: RE: How do BTers affect your life? In all seriousness, I think it would be hard to put into words the change we all get from BT. I mean can you imagine trying to buy and read all of the information that we get from the real tri threads (unlike COJ), I have 7 tri books and I do not think they have the wealth of knowledge that I have gain on newbie questions, reviews, equipment advice etc. Can you imagine trying to keep logs for weights, swim, run, bike, and all of the other exercising we do in those spiral binders they sell at book stores. Also inspiring, commenting on each others threads, talking smack and giving each other motivation to get up early, stay up late, skip meals, movies, and parties with our friends and relatives to work out and train because we know that we put we were going to workout today and if we dont there will be 9 messages and PMs in our mailbox calling us slackers, and whimps for not sticking to our word. Lastly (not leastly...lol) I think all of us BTers effect each other because we all have become cyber buds and friends. I know when I talk to my real friends and family about something I thought was funny that I said to Janelle, Jim, Renee, Haley and all of the BTers that I know by your nickname (3558, Morley, tricomment, chimpy, marmadaddy etc) in a post; they all look at me like I am strange. I think it is great to have all of these new friends and it is great that we get to meet in real life at races and it is like meeting family that we havnt seen since the last year reunion. I think BT has had a major impact on my life and if it wasnt for BT I dont think I would have been as far as I am in this sport, since I have only been doing it since may. BT rocks! golfinggods - 2005-12-28 1:31 PM I know longer feel the shame of thinking I am the only person that pee's in the shower.
